THREE REASONS TEENS DON'T CONSIDER CAREERS IN THE TRADES. At FSG we spend a lot of time talking with service leaders about the challenges of bringing young people into our industry. Of course the problem is not just in foodservice-related trades, it is societal and even global. So we need to look across organizational boundaries for information and ideas. Here is a very focused (short) article from the NAHB (National Association of Home Builders) that I think really hits the bullseye. See if you think that I'm right. https://lnkd.in/gpMapsri

It is so important for theses young individuals to recognize that construction is not merely a last resort option but rather, it stands as one of the most crucial trades in the process of building and fortifying America's infrastructure.
"We need to show kids early on that the trades are viable careers with opportunities for growth and corner offices, just like many other jobs that require a college degree." ABC's Greg Sizemore joined WORLD News Group Radio to discuss that, while trade school enrollment is on the rise, the need for skilled craft professionals is rising even faster. #ABCMeritShopProud https://lnkd.in/eEjpnJkd

It is well known and documented that Maine has a workforce shortage. “Help Wanted” signs appear often on Main Streets in every county. Demographically, Maine is the oldest and most rural state. More Mainers are retiring from, rather than entering, our workplaces. These subject matter experts need to impart their knowledge, skills and wisdom upon the upcoming generation of talent to help our economy thrive. Meanwhile, young adults are searching for new and increased onramps to the career pathways they want and need. Furthermore, to achieve its 10-year strategic goals, Maine needs to attract and retain 75,000 more workers into the state’s talent pool by the end of this decade. This is no small or temporary endeavor.
Opinion: Maine apprenticeship programs are showing great promise and outcomes

Is this where we should direct our young people’s attention? 🤔 The rise of AI and robotics is set to replace many white-collar jobs. While new jobs will emerge, not everyone will fit into these roles. Accountants, bankers, sales reps, administrators, recruiters, interpreters, and even coaches, beware. If you're not replaced, you'll be fewer and working alongside AI and robots. 🤖 Don’t laugh. This is coming. 📉 We're talking massive changes in just a few years, not decades. 📆 However, in the foreseeable future, AI and robots won't be able to do everything. They can't fit a new bathroom or rewire a house. 🛠️ Skilled plumbers, electricians, gas fitters, and similar trades will become highly valued. 💡 For schoolchildren and teenagers, it’s wise to figure out what AI or robots can’t do in the near future. Study that trade. Keep your options open with other studies, but prepare for a different world of work. Head to where the puck will be, as they say in ice hockey. 🏒 #futureofwork #ai #robotics #careercoaching

The United States will need thousands of new skilled construction workers to address the nation's housing deficit, which the National Association of Home Builders estimates at 1.5 million homes. Earlier this year, I had the privilege of joining James Tobin, CAE, President of the National Association of Home Builders, Maria Flynn, CEO of Jobs for the Future (JFF), and Dr. Andy Hines of the University of Houston at the Boys & Girls Clubs of America Conference to discuss the skills shortage that impacts every industry, particularly the skilled trades. The encouraging news is that there is widespread agreement on the need to provide our youth with greater exposure to a diverse set of careers from a young age. The NAHB is doing commendable work to support school districts and organizations like B&GC in this endeavor. Here is the summary of our discussion at the B&GC conference which links to NAHB's workforce development page rich in resources to promote careers in construction in your community. https://lnkd.in/ewByUXtc #Skilledtrades #constructionjobs #Skillsshortage #apprenticeships #youth

JVS alum Ibrahim Mohamed is featured in today's CalMatters article by Adam Echelman highlighting the High Road Training Partnership (HRTP), which provides state funding for programs that train workers for quality jobs and/or transform workplaces to provide better conditions, benefits, and wages for employees. Funding for workforce development programs that focus on family-sustaining careers in in-demand industries is vital to advancing economic equity and building a future where all workers can thrive. JVS receives HRTP funding for our training programs that support jobseekers on their paths to economic mobility, and our outcomes show what is possible when workforce development programs are adequately funded and centered around long-term worker achievements. Thanks to Ibrahim, JVS Senior Manager of Partnership Impact Elizabeth Toups, Contra Costa Water District, and CCWD DEI Workforce Development Program Manager Steven Currie (he, him, his) for being a part of this article. #HRTP #WorkforceDevelopment #QualityJobs #SustainableJobs #JVS #JVSBayArea https://lnkd.in/gmvuEQHW
