In 2020, the Supreme Court of Utah relaxed the ABA rule prohibiting non-lawyers from sharing in the ownership of a law firm, creating a regulatory "sandbox" that allows the creation of alternative legal businesses. The State of Arizona implemented a similar reform in 2021. Other states may likely follow suit. These reforms were widely seen as one of the biggest disruptions to the legal profession in more than a century. To discuss an overview of these innovative reforms and what preliminary conclusions can be drawn from these sandboxes, the Institute of Law, Technology, and Innovation at Florida State University College of Law welcomed Lucy Ricca, the executive director of the Deborah L. Rhode Center on the legal profession at Stanford Law School. Check out the event below: https://lnkd.in/gHKg5BEN #innovation #legalprofession

Thank you to Law360 for allowing me to consult with you on the topic of the relationship between securing a Big Law job and attending a top tier law school. Article excerpts and link to full article below. These Law Schools Are The Tops For BigLaw By Kevin Penton Law360 (May 8, 2024, 2:04 PM EDT) – The law schools at Georgetown, Harvard and Columbia are renowned for effectively serving as training grounds for BigLaw. But while they may consistently send the most graduates, other law schools are sending a higher percentage of their grads to larger firms. And the lineup of law schools that are seeing the highest share of their students go to law firms with more than 500 attorneys is changing: Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law topped this year's list, with 67% of its 2023 graduates entering BigLaw, beating out Columbia Law School's 65%, according to data released by the American Bar Association last month. Cornell dropped to fifth place this year with 63% of its graduates entering BigLaw, but it was No. 1 on the list for its 2021 and 2022 graduates. The University of Southern California's Gould School of Law has been a presence in the top 10 for the past three years, with its placement of 57% good for seventh place among 2023 grads, ahead of Harvard Law School and Georgetown University Law Center. The trend may be a reflection that after years of talking about changing their hiring habits, more BigLaw firms may finally be breaking their molds and increasingly looking outside of the law schools that typically feed them, said Eliza Stoker, executive director for legal search and recruiting firm Major Lindsey & Africa's associate practice group. While BigLaw placement rates may vary from year to year for law schools that typically fall within the top 20, law firms are generally going to covet graduates from any of those schools, making year-to-year fluctuations not particularly meaningful, said Nicole Kennedy, National Associate Practice Group Leader and Principal with consulting firm Korn Ferry. Graduates from those schools usually will be able to field multiple offers, she said. "Whether it's Harvard or [University of Virginia School of Law,] it's really just splitting hairs because all of those students that are performing well at any top-tier school can have a BigLaw job, if that's what they ultimately want," Kennedy said.

Coming out of law school, I expected every evidentiary issue in a lawsuit would be some complex, complicated, almost overwhelming issue requiring advanced analysis and understanding of law dating back to the Magna Carta times. Fortunately, I can count on one hand the number of times I have had a really complicated evidentiary issue come up in a case. In law school, our evidence test was multiple choice with answer options from A-GG if I recall. Thirty plus options for an answer. Rest easy law students, it gets better. It gets way better. #sanantonioinjurylawyers #evidence #lawschool

Alex Tallon participated in the annual conference of the European Forum of Legal Professions on November 8, focusing on improving justice through innovation (“from challenges and needs to best practices”). ⚖️ He took part in a round table discussion on the key issue: “What are the pressing needs of the legal professions, and what are the dangers and limits of innovations?” This question is at the heart of Miles Legal's approach to innovation. 🎯 #Law #Innovation
