Hurricane Helene struck two weeks ago, and Hurricane Milton is expected to hit Florida in the coming days. What’s particularly alarming about Milton is its unusually small eye.
You might think a small eye is a good thing, but in fact, it’s not. Picture a ballerina spinning—when she pulls her limbs in, she spins faster. The same principle applies to storms. A smaller eye means the storm is more intense and dangerous.
We cannot ignore the role of climate change in amplifying these extreme weather events. And a year filled with airstrikes only worsens the situation. One month of relentless bombing in Palestine produces as much carbon emissions as 10 countries. Now, with Lebanon and Iran joining the fray, the environmental impact is devastating.
We cannot advocate for sustainability and climate action while ignoring the destructive consequences of conflict. Ceasefire is the only way forward.
