Reflexive practice is—or should be—an essential aspect of all humanitarian and (international or local) community development work—the ability to reflect on and learn from our practice. Think about your last project aimed at those who are usually left behind, and consider who ultimately benefited from it. Who did it ultimately serve? Does something different need to happen next time? What is that? #ReflexivePractice #GEDSI #internationaldevelopment #diversityequityinclusion #disabilityinclusion #SOGIESC

⛺ Exit This Way ➡️ Community Engagement in Site Closure ⛺ During our latest Community Coffee and Chat, we had an insightful discussion with experts like Kate Holland, Richard Nixon Okello, and Philip John, focusing on the importance of community engagement in managing site closure and transition for displaced populations. Key Highlights from the session: 🔑 Community Engagement in Nigeria Philip John shared experiences from the closing of several formal camps in Nigeria, emphasizing the critical role of community consultation in ensuring safe, informed closures and durable solutions for displaced families. Philip provided examples of closure processes with and without community engagement, and the critical results of both versions. His key takeaway? Effective coordination and planning are non-negotiable. 🇮🇶 Challenges in Iraq Kate Holland highlighted the complexities of camp closures under government pressure in Iraq, particularly when faced with forced evictions. Her strategies and tools used focused on open communication, advocacy for displaced people, and maintaining community trust. She also touched on the importance of family contingency planning and sharing best practices with NGOs involved in camp management. 🇲🇿 Mozambique’s Unique Challenges Richard Nixon Okello provided insights into Mozambique's displacement sites, where poor infrastructure and security issues complicate the process. He stressed the need for collaborative engagement with local authorities and site management committees to ensure the needs of displaced populations are met. 💡 The Bigger Picture The discussion wrapped up with a focus on durable solutions and how community engagement plays a crucial role in linking site closures with long-term outcomes, including livelihood opportunities and housing, both in camp and non-camp situations. Eminenur Çınar asked thought-provoking questions on information campaigns, with Kate detailing proactive outreach strategies used in Iraq. Finally, the experts were asked to share what they would ask donors in the appeal for support to more community engagement in site closure and transitions. 🤝 What’s Next? To improve outcomes, we must: Enhance collaboration with local authorities and displaced communities. Secure flexible funding to adapt to the evolving needs of the displaced. Continue sharing best practices across regions, ensuring displaced populations are actively involved in decision-making. 🌟 Thank you to all participants for your valuable contributions.
