Failure of a California almond grower shows the unsustainability of some sustainable agriculture investments I saw this investment opportunity before and decided NOT TO GO as I had some DOUBT on the PROJECTVIABILITY. I was glad The collapse of a California almond producer highlights the challenges and potential pitfalls in what are often considered sustainable agricultural investments. Despite the perception of almonds as an environmentally friendly crop, factors such as water scarcity, climate change, and high production costs can undermine their sustainability. This case serves as a cautionary tale, illustrating that not all investments in sustainable agriculture are viable long-term. It is estimated that $44 trillion of economic value is dependent on biodiversity and the ecosystem services it provides, equivalent to 50% of global GDP. 🌱 Saphira Suoi, Impact Investment Analyst at Clear Skies Investment Management, is collaborating with the FAIRR Initiative and other investors to encourage pork and poultry producers to conduct meaningful risk assessments around their management of animal waste and implement plans to reduce water pollution. Key report findings include: 🔷 Companies’ #disclosure on risk assessments conducted for their processing facilities is improving, with 10 out of 12 having up-to-date information, including water quality risks. 🔷 Disclosure does not meet investor expectations, especially when operations are found to be at medium or high risk on water quality indicators. 🔷 Support from #AnimalProtein producers and monitoring of their suppliers around lagoon coverage or manure use as fertiliser is scarce.
