In my personal opinion, the 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' (Clean India Mission) is the biggest Greenwashing project, while it is true that thousands of toilets have been constructed across the country through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds, the actual impact and usability of these facilities are questionable. According to a survey, around 58 per cent of Indians believe that the public toilets built under this mission in markets, religious sites, tourist hubs, railway stations, bus terminals, and hospitals are in poor condition. Furthermore, over one-fourth of Indians reportedly “went in but came out without using public toilets,” with only 18 per cent of Indians using free public toilets. Among those who do use public toilets, only 10 per cent find them usable. The majority of urban Indians prefer toilets located in commercial complexes. This survey, conducted by LocalCircles, covered 340 districts across the country, including Tier-1, 2, and 3 cities and towns, with over 39,000 respondents. The Delhi High Court has also criticized the Central and Delhi governments, along with civic authorities, for the poor state of public toilets, emphasizing that cleanliness, along with access to clean water and power, is fundamental. This campaign appears to be a strategy to garner votes by presenting the Swachh Bharat Campaign as a significant favor to the country, supposedly making India cleaner. However, given the condition and usability of the facilities, it seems more like a state-run greenwashing campaign, where the government's environmental efforts are overstated for political gain without delivering substantial or sustainable results.

Today, I had the privilege of reconnecting with Ms. Samia Saleem, an inspiring leader and former Additional Secretary of Mines & Minerals, under whom I had the honour of working as Assistant Director during 2020-2021. Currently serving as Project Director of the Punjab Green Development Program(SP&IU, EPCCD)—a transformative $273 million World Bank-funded initiative—her leadership continues to drive impactful and sustainable change in Punjab. The Punjab Green Development Program is a pioneering initiative aimed at strengthening environmental governance and promoting green investments. From establishing air and water quality monitoring networks to advancing environmentally responsible policies across key sectors like transport, energy, and industry, the program is a testament to the importance of innovative governance in addressing environmental challenges. Reflecting on my time working under her guidance, I was always inspired by her efforts to champion gender-neutral initiatives, such as "Women in Mining," and her commitment to driving data-driven insights through publications like the "Mines & Minerals Sectoral Report." Her ability to combine inclusive leadership with evidence-based policymaking was instrumental in creating an enabling environment for progress in a traditionally male-dominated sector. As a recent graduate from Macquarie University in Data Science, I couldn’t help but reflect on how data-driven decision-making can play a pivotal role in shaping this sector further. By leveraging advanced analytics, predictive modeling, and machine learning, programs like these can unlock new insights into pollution trends, optimize resource allocation, and measure the real-time impact of green interventions. In fact, the ability to integrate environmental data from air and water monitoring networks into actionable policies could accelerate the journey toward a more sustainable Punjab. Having worked closely with Ms. Samia on several development projects, I’ve always admired her vision, dedication, and ability to translate big ideas into actionable results like Our conversation today reinforced the value of combining visionary leadership with data-driven strategies to achieve impactful, long-term outcomes. Thank you, Ms. Samia, for continuing to inspire and for leading the charge in building a greener, more sustainable Punjab. Here’s to the immense potential of using data and innovation to create a better tomorrow! 🌱 Keep shining bright ✨ #Leadership #DataScience #Sustainability #GreenDevelopment #EnvironmentalGovernance #PunjabDevelopment

#WED24 | How can we use Education and Communication (IEC) for Environmental Change? Our next case study sheds light on the importance of effective communication for change! Read on to find out how Education and Communication (IEC) raised source segregation levels from 10% to about 70%. Under the Indo-German DeveloPPP project Alag Karo (II), several IEC tools were used to implement source segregation of municipal solid waste. This change was driven by hyperlocal messages reinforced through a radio campaign and at community events with games, competitions and nukkad nataks (street plays) performed with gusto both by the project team at Saahas and local children. Housemaids were trained in both Hindi and Bengali, the primary language for many of them. Any questions, challenges faced by the housekeeping staff were duly addressed by the project team at Saahas in collaboration with the citizens, again highlighting the need for effective communication. Impact created: 👉 As a result of source segregation, waste workers were able to increase their incomes and the frequencies of injuries they had reduced. 👉 Segregated wet waste resulted in the production of high-quality compost that is distributed to the residents. Read more about this in the case study below. Stay tuned for our upcoming impact report to know more! #GIZ #WasteSegregation #WasteManagement Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) Coca-Cola India Tetra Pak Saahas Municipal Corporation of Gurugram

🌱As part of a study on Harithakarma Sena (HKS), I had the opportunity to visit the Green Worms unit, where I observed an impressive Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model in action. This visit inspired me to explore and compare the PPP model with the Government-Led model, leading to a collaboration with Sreerag Kuruvat to write a paper titled "Comparative Analysis of Government-Led and Public-Private Partnership Models for Waste Management: A Case Study of Chemmanad Grama Panchayat, Kerala." I am thrilled to share that this paper was featured in the Book of Abstracts of SUSCON XI, the 11th Annual International Conference on Sustainability, organized by Indian Institute of Management Shillong, Umsawli (ISBN: 978-93-341-4458-1), pages 48-51. The findings indicate that the PPP model is more effective in terms of waste collection volume, public participation, and user fee collection. The flexibility and efficiency of the PPP model lead to higher levels of service provision and financial performance. However, the HKS model is more effective in terms of social welfare perspective, by providing better employment conditions, demonstrating a stable approach to managing waste management staff. #Sustainability #WasteManagement #PPPModel #SocialWelfare #Research #Collaboration #HarithakarmaSena #SUSCONXI #IIMShillong

Communication is one of the most effective ways to change behaviours. It doesn't matter whether it's verbal or non-verbal – it has to capture people's attention. Alag Karo designs both the forms of communication to nudge people to segregate continuously, until it becomes a habit. This case study shows how #AlagKaro has successfully changed the behaviors of people living in plotted colonies. The administrative control of Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) in these plotted colonies is limited compared to RWAs in high-rise condominiums. With this unique challenge where residents are responsible for their own plots, this case study presents a success story of people changing their behaviors for waste segregation and reaping rewards in form of compost delivered to their homes! #Powerofcommunity #alagkaro Sonia Garga Archana Tripathi Wilma Rodrigues Divya Tiwari Aruneema Singh Jasprit Kaur Sumit Jugran Kamlesh Kholiya Coca-Cola India Tetra Pak Dr. Ruby Makhija Swati Singh Sambyal (she/her) Ashish Chaturvedi Rachna Arora Rittyz Kashyap Hasiru Dala
