Will Eliminating More Labor Finally Make Kroger's & Ocado's Partnership Worth It? Kroger was Ocado's path the US market. The joint partnership planned to build 11 CFC sites by the end of 2022. To date, there are 8 in operation with the other 3 still planned. Rodney McMullen (Kroger CEO) wanted to pause any new e-commerce sites until existing ones are optimized. The question is, have they done it? The latest development in their collaboration is adding more automation to two key areas of a cube-style fulfillment system. • An On-Grid Robotic Pick • Automated Frameload Capabilities ON-GRID PICKING Robotic arm installed on the automated fulfillment grid. Packs bags with items deposited by bots on the grid. Equipped with advanced machine vision, reinforcement learning, and sensing capabilities. AUTOMATED FRAMELOAD Automates loading prepared customer orders onto delivery frames. Eliminates the need for workers in this physically demanding task. Uses computer vision to examine the tote and the frame. By adding more automation, they are increasing reliability, speed and reducing costs. The biggest challenge grocery has with eCommerce fulfillment is getting enough density and AOV for what these backend systems cost. https://lnkd.in/gVu7z-Ct Ocado and Aeon to build 3rd CFC robotic warehouse in Japan Ocado Group, a British online supermarket and technology group, has announced its plans to build a third robotic warehouse in Japan as part of its ongoing partnership with Aeon, a major Japanese retail company. This expansion marks a significant milestone in their collaboration, which began in 2019 with the goal of revolution in online grocery shopping in Japan. The third Customer Fulfillment Center (CFC), as Ocado refers to these automated warehouses, will be located in Kuki-Miyashiro in the Saitama prefecture. It is expected to go live in 2027 and will utilize Ocado’s cutting-edge technology to efficiently fulfill online grocery orders. This expansion is a boost for the group, following a recent setback with its Canadian partner Sobeys pausing the opening of a warehouse. Online grocery delivery service Ocado is considering expanding its robot-picking delivery service to New York. The move comes as relations with partner M&S deteriorate, with Ocado claiming that it is owed millions of pounds from a delivery agreement struck in 2019. If Ocado ends its deal with M&S, analysts believe it could focus on building its technology offering and potentially move into the US market. The company utilizes eight-wheeled robots that operate within a "Hive" to pick items and pack them for delivery. At one London warehouse, over 2,000 robots work non-stop for 20 hours a day, each picking up to 2 million items in a shift. While humans are still involved in the process, the robot army replaces hundreds of human staff. Last year, the company unveiled a loss of £403m ($559m), compared to a loss of £500m in the previous year, but its retail division's revenue hit almost £2.4bn, up 7% from £2.2bn a year earlier, while its technology solutions business also surged by 44% to £421m.
