MANY EDUCATIONAL Administrators are not paying attention to the growing attention to education matters in America that will forge a type of change in policy and practice that will be very risky if not sensibly and proactively strategized. Creating education funding models that are truly based on merit and totally absent of any form of discrimination should be under development right now. With the anticipated spike in on-campus protests, educator sit-outs, law suits, and disruption of "things as usual" in classrooms across the nation, it only makes sense for educational professionals who influence local policy and procedures to be building tasks and strategy diagrams for funding and enrollment. As the new government completes its first 100 days here is a reminder of the importance of local councils in supporting schools. We need to give local councils more powers and value their democratic voice so often missing in other parts of the system. The council role in school place planning – making sure there are enough school places locally. A debate has been raging for many years about the role that councils should play in education. They retain a very wide range of legal duties to promote high educational standards locally, ensure fair access to schools, and protect the interest of the most vulnerable pupils.

The Education sector needs to start prioritizing learning from a psycho-social lens. They need to understand the implications that contextual and structural issues such overcrowding, lack of access to resources etc. affect learning and the mental health of learners. Teachers also end up under-performing because of unconducive working environments. Psycho-social support and inclusive learning also means having enough teachers for our learners and healthy environments
[Joint media statement ] 📄 Equal Education and the Equal Education Law Centre strongly oppose the Western Cape Education Department’s decision to cut over 2000 teaching posts: https://lnkd.in/gnKx6stP Fiscal austerity continues to deprive learners of the full realisation of their constitutional right to basic education. Severely overcrowded classes, with 50 to 60 learners in a lesson, are still prevalent in many poorly-resourced schools across the country. Years of relentless austerity have worsened this situation. We call on the public to defend the right to education by participating in a community-led picket at the WCED offices on Friday 13 September at 7:30 am. We further call on the national government and provincial authorities to rethink their budget priorities, invest in our future, protect teachers’ livelihoods, and protect the rights of learners.

What is a child, but the product of its parents and what is a school bureaucracy, but a public servant. It is not the Teacher who makes the citizen - that is the parents responsibility. Parents, not teachers, are the primary educator of their children. The teacher’s vocation is to address these diverse young individuals and impart the tools we use in life, which we call education - the means to learn and think for ourselves, not to be told what to think - that is indoctrination. It is a fact that our colleges and schools are full of teachers and professors who want to impart their ideology on their students - that is a waste of time and not their purpose and no court of law supports that view. This is expressly why we need a free enterprise system for K-12 education, where patents can choose. All of this would be resolved by school choice - that is what should prevail in a country that stands for freedom.

What do you do when a school doesn’t want your child? When the school you want to name in your child’s EHC plan not only says they can’t meet the child’s needs but seems dismissive of the very idea, and of your child themselves? Our latest blog explains the right to a mainstream education, and how the law that underpins this right is sometimes misunderstood by schools Read it here: https://bit.ly/45ZVTuD

what I've seen so far of government strategies to tackle send reform is to change the law, to take away rights of children with additional needs. How about instead of looking from the top down, we change from the bottom up. The current law is fit for purpose, if you implement it and hold the LA's and settings accountable. Let's rewrite the whole education system to make it fit for purpose for all children. To be fully inclusive in mainstream settings, will take time, money, training and a strong lead to drive it. Its about time the whole education system was reviewed
