As we progress a few months into the 24/25 season, it's a perfect time to reflect on my scouting activities and ensure they align closely with the club's requirements. The phrase "busy fool" is often used in the business world to describe companies or individuals whose efforts are misdirected. In scouting, this concept holds true as well. It's vital that, as scouts, we avoid presenting players who don’t match the club’s needs—whether due to the wrong position, age group, or other factors. To maintain focus, I employ gap analysis and other pipelining techniques to evaluate my player database. This approach helps me identify areas where certain positions or age groups may be under- or over-scouted, enabling me to adjust my efforts accordingly. By addressing these gaps and refining my focus, I can ensure no talent pool is overlooked. This strategy not only makes my efforts more efficient but also keeps them directly aligned with the club's recruitment targets and long-term strategy. A data-driven approach saves time, streamlines decision-making, and, most importantly, ensures I build a balanced and robust talent pipeline that meets the club's needs.

Building and recruiting for sports teams are always great case studies for how to build a Talent Acquisition and recruitment function. Case in point in this article, the Toronto Bluejays are looking to hire a director of Amateur Scouting and this article has some interesting insights on what they should look for in candidates. What I find missing is the candidate should understand the culture the Toronto Bluejays are building as well as all the other attributes mentioned. https://lnkd.in/gYt7z6Ci
