This bridge by OMA, which opened yesterday in Bordeaux, has been designed to be a large public space. "The [44m/144ft] width of the bridge’s platform is doubled to create neutral, unprogrammed space that can be used for any cultural or commercial purpose, such as markets, fairs, rallies, car club meetings, and festivals for music or wine." Alongside transportation, there is opportunity for social interaction. Without architectural programs like cafes and houses, it falls halfway between a typical bridge and urban fabric. They say the aesthetics have intentionally been dumbed down so that the bridge as a structure disappears, highlighting the activities. "It abandons any interest in style, form, and structural expression in favor of a commitment to performance and an interest in potential use by the people of Bordeaux." I am split on this, since there are many beautifully designed public plazas (mainly through geometry and paving, but also seating and canopies) where the style doesn't impede their use. This looks a bit like a highway, so a little more style would not have hurt. Also, I can't help but feel that OMA, being Dutch, found it somewhat natural to extend urban spaces over bodies of water :).
