Motivation isn't mysterious - it's mathematical. In this clip from Product Driven, CTO coach Stephan Schmidt breaks down his brilliant formula: Motivation = Joy + Discipline - Frustration As tech leaders, we often focus on removing frustration, but there's more to the equation. The real insight? You need both joy and discipline to maintain high motivation, especially when tackling the less exciting parts of software development. What's your take on developer motivation? How do you balance these elements in your team? Full episode in comments 👇

>> STAY FOCUSED You push your engineering to deliver that one killer feature but the needle is not moving... Do you know how many other battles your teams are fighting? #DORA metrics are a lagging indicator of what has passed. Have you felt that: > release dates are dragging on and on > you're in a constant rush > adding one more engineer slows things down instead of speeding them up Leadership needs different optics if they want to champion "that one killer feature release". There's too much invisible stuff that's inside the "product dev black box" and everyone knows that but nobody is talking about it. I discovered that Akooda (screenshot 👇) is helping with leading metrics of our teams focus. But you don't need a quick tool to discover where your efforts are going. Start by asking your teams subjectively: 1. From 1 to 5, how confident are they that they will deliver the expected? 2. From 1 to 5, how confident are they in their team members to deliver the expected? You might uncover hidden value blockers with such subjective measures. If you don't have time to ask such questions and listen actively then you should definitely adopt a tool for your Ops intelligence. This will switch you from "pushing" to "pulling" leadership which is always more inspiring. Thank me later ;) --- ✍️ Do you agree or disagree? ♻️ Reshare if I got it right. #Facilitation #SoftSkills #TeamWork #ProductDevelopment #LeanStartup #GrowthHacking #VentureBuilding

Trust your engineering teams to understand the economics of projects. Show them the numbers. Software is a piece within a bigger ecosystem, that includes budgets, investments and returns. Software is economic leverage. Let your brightest in on the numbers, and sit back as their problem-solving nature takes over for the win. 🚀 Are you ready to start Delivering Daily? As the CEO of Geisel Software, I've hired a lot of people. Including some leaders who have never been software developers 🤔 Whenever these new leaders start they are always stressed that they won't be able to lead a team of engineers well. 🌟 But guess what? It's not only possible; it can also be incredibly rewarding. This is exactly what I tell my non-developer leaders so that they don't just survive, they THRIVE in this role: 🤫 Full Disclosure → Keep no secrets → Share the complete vision and challenges with your team → This can lead to faster, more innovative solutions 📚 Hit the Books → A little knowledge goes a long way → Diving into basic programming courses can demystify the tech speak and help you gauge easy and what's hard → This understanding builds respect and makes your leadership more effective 🏆 Feedback is Gold → Listen, learn, and adapt → Engage sincerely with your team’s feedback to understand the real hurdles → Fosters a culture of openness and problem-solving Sometimes it takes longer for a non-tech leader to earn the 🫡 Trust and 🫡 Respect Of a Software engineer, but if you utilize the above tactics, you’ll get there much faster. If you’ve ever led a tech team without a tech background, how did you bridge the gap? Share your tactics or questions below! 💬👇 #Leadership #SoftwareDevelopment #TechLeadership #TeamManagement #ContinuousLearning #ProfessionalGrowth #Feedback #Innovation #NonTechLeaders #CareerGrowth #TechSkills #ProblemSolving

After years of teaching, learning, and building, I’m taking my passion for education and developer advocacy to the next level as Senior Developer Advocate at LinearB and the new host of Dev Interrupted, an engineering leadership podcast and newsletter with thousands of weekly listeners and readers. Teaching has always been my superpower. From classrooms to Zoom rooms, I’ve learned that great engineering isn’t just about shipping code, it’s about clear communication, shared purpose, and empowering teams to thrive. In my first episode, I dig into developer productivity’s biggest question: Is communication the secret sauce? Ori Keren and Ben Lloyd Pearson joined me to unpack how leaders can connect the dots between what devs need and what the business wants. If you're familiar with my posting by now, you already know that this isn’t just a career move for me. It’s a platform to ask the hard questions and start the conversations we need to have in engineering. Whether you’re leading a team or just starting your career, let’s figure this out together. Follow along. This is going to be fun. 😇 📖 Read: https://lnkd.in/gFkaBidB 🎧 Listen: https://lnkd.in/gD3Kr5qj
