A big announcement was made almost at the finale of the Start Summit: The HSG START Accelerator was presented as a new joint project of the HSG, START Global and the Switzerland Innovation Park Ost (SIP Ost). The internationally oriented accelerator programme will provide professional support to selected startups in the early growth phase starting with a pilot batch in autumn 2024. The HSG START Accelerator builds on the following existing startup initiatives: - Startup@HSG Incubator at the University of St.Gallen - Startfeld support process at Switzerland Innovation Park Ost - START Hack and START Summit organized by the START Global association, including the planned START Foundation. The three founding partners HSG, START Global and SIP Ost of the HSG START Accelerator Foundation have set themselves the goal to set up the leading accelerator programme that accompanies top startups on their way to becoming scale-ups. Dietmar Grichnik, Professor for Entrepreneurship and Vice President for Innovation and Quality at HSG, said at the START Summit: «Entrepreneurship has always been an integral part of HSG’s DNA. With our new vision, we want to create a new entrepreneurial momentum with our partners. Entrepreneurial talents are closely supported and specifically promoted at HSG through the incubation, acceleration, transfer and spin-off phases of Startup@HSG. We are excited to announce this collaborative initiative involving START, SIP Ost and HSG: the HSG START Accelerator. In an intensive three-month programme, selected startups are prepared for the growth phase, making them particularly interesting for VC investors. This strategic orientation will increase the dynamism of the startup ecosystem, promote innovation in a more targeted manner and strengthen value creation in the region and beyond.» From this special highlight at the START Summit 2024, we look ahead: What's next for startup promotion in St.Gallen? The region is striving to become the number 1 Unicorn forge. Armed with a startup strategy developed by the University of St.Gallen in 2023, the government is ready to move forward and is applying to the Cantonal Council for a special credit of 10 million francs to implement the measures. 5.4 million is earmarked as startup funding for the establishment of the «HSG START Accelerator» Foundation. The Cantonal Council is expected to discuss the matter next June. Bernd F. YES, they do. But not quite as much as you may think. The #Incubators and #Accelerators are not an end-by-themselves for your #startup success. It is very important to understand the scope, limitations, and the operating business model of each #Incubator or #Accelerator. There is a wide variability in them. Although, by providing crucial resources, mentorship, and networking opportunities, accelerators propel startups towards higher growth and increased funding compared to their peers. And access to expert guidance and funding accelerates market entry and product development, while fostering valuable connections within the startup ecosystem drives partnerships, customer acquisition, and investor confidence. For startups navigating growth, leveraging these opportunities can be transformative, ensuring long-term sustainability and competitive advantage. These are several of the good things. However, end-to-end de-risking of a startup is a continuum - a continuous process - and it is not a discrete or sequential step-by-step chain activity. What in reality happens at an #Incubator or an #Accelerator happens is that they are good at certain activity or the other during this continuum and not necessarily be with you throughout the whole journey. That is why despite that the outcomes being slightly better - but the failure rates are still pretty high. It boils down to our very understanding of the process of commercializing innovation. A deeper dive into this topic has been done by studying of over 4,000 incubators and accelerators in the book - "Industrializing Innovation - the next revolution" - wherein the authors - who are not academic but practicing entrepreneurs and business builders - lay out a roadmap for repeatable #startup successes. #Startup #StartupSuccess #Accelerators #Incubators #Industrializing-Innovation

“A new study by Wharton professors Valentina Assenova and Raphael (Raffi) Amit brings fresh insight into the performance of accelerated startups. The paper shows that participating in accelerators generally leads to positive outcomes in terms of startup business success rates. In examining data from 8,580 fledgling companies that made it past the initial screening stage at 408 accelerators in 176 countries between 2013 and 2019, the professors found that accelerated startups grew more, on average, than their peers. Positive Outcomes of Accelerators “Accelerated startups were 3.4% more likely to raise venture capital, and raised $1.8 million more in the first year after graduating from these programs,” Assenova said. “They also planned to raise $2.64 million more capital, on average, over the next year. Accelerated startups also generated more revenue, hired more full-time employees, and paid more in wages to their employees, on average — indicating that they were scaling faster than their peers.” Source: https://lnkd.in/dB6XZyAw

Hey everyone, we hope you had a great weekend! We're excited to continue our LinkedIn educational series, focusing on key terms essential in building early-stage companies. This week’s term is the business incubator. A business incubator is an organization or program designed to nurture the growth and success of early-stage startups, particularly those in the product development phase. Incubators provide a range of resources, including mentorship from experienced professionals and office space and infrastructure. They also offer networking opportunities with investors and industry leaders, along with access to capital through introductions to angel investors, venture capitalists, or grants. In exchange for these services, incubators often take an equity stake in the startups they support. Well-known business incubators include Y Combinator, Techstars and 500 Startups. The primary goal of a business incubator is to help startups overcome early challenges and develop sustainable business models. By offering a supportive environment, incubators allow founders to focus on scaling their ventures and refining their products while mitigating common risks. Stay tuned for more insights! #BusinessIncubator #StartupSupport #Entrepreneurship #Mentorship #Networking #Innovation #VentureCapital #EarlyStageCompanies #Startups #IncubatorSuccess #EntrepreneurLife https://lnkd.in/g2BvqmHG
