Another true story for this week, in a Global Corporate company. VP: Our best team and strongest employees are from Korea, but they just can't land a position in the global headquarters. Me: They fail during the interview correct? VP: Totally, it's like a ring of fire. They can't show what they are capable of in a way that the global team ( recruiter and manager) seem to understand and appreciate. Me: So we are passing on some true potentials that could benefit both the global teams and the geography or territory they represent. What's next? How do we educate a strong potential to talk the global language, giving him/her a chance to grow in a company and deliver to his/her full potential? How do we educate a global team to appreciate the diversity coming from outside, especially if their communication style and body language is different from what we commonly see and expect? Good insight, there are points to be taken. Considering that in the few weeks time, I might involved in a training.
This interview of president elect Prabowo Subianto’s with Al Jezeera’s Jessica Washington is one of his first interviews to the foreign media. Such interviews would definitely shape the perception of the global community toward his leadership and incoming administration. Some critics have said that Probowo seemed ill at ease and deflected rather than address some of the more difficult questions. If you’ve been trained on media handling skills or are a PR professional, what observations would you make from the interview, and what suggestions would you give to President-elect Prabowo so he’d appear more media savvy in his next interviews? Here’s three observations to start the ball rolling, we’d advise him to manage his hand gestures. Continuous rubbing of his hands are the small gestures that usually signal that someone is nervous or not confident. He’d be better off sitting in a more relaxed position and pout his hands under the table if he can’t control these “nervous” gestures. He can still bring his hands up and above the table if he wants to make a point. Generally, large gestures of the hands are ok, small gestures denote nervousness. The president-elect also looked down and into mid-distance space instead of making eye contact with the interviewer. This does not engender trust and confidence. Eye-contact, however, is a tricky thing. While lack of eye contact can give the impression of evasiveness, eyeball-to eyeball can sometimes be misinterpreted as a sign or intimidation or weirdness. The best practice is to focus the eyes on somewhere around the shoulders and the head of the interviewer. Prabowo also repeatedly used the phrase “Well, you know” to respond to the interviewer’s questions. After a few times it starts to grate. A trick to avoid this is to slow down the pace of the interview. Wait a beat or two before answering the questions and use that time to come up with a list of stock responses (at least initially until he gets more practiced) such as “I am aware of such claims…”, “That is one interpretation of events…”, or even “I disagree with that observation…”. In our view there is much more that can be improved from the interview but what do you think? What would your suggestions to the president-elect be so he can project a more confident and media savvy persona to the international audience at interviews?
