I struggle to find another area of the economy where the phrase “cost reflective tariff” is used. For the vast majority of goods and services produced and consumed in the economy, we simply refer to this as prices. The term “cost reflective tariff” implies a third party intervention. Is it a mere coincidence that where such third party intervention is so entrenched, our nation also has a catastrophic crisis?

How do improvements in electricity affordability benefit low-income mini-grid customers? A recent study on tariff harmonization conducted by CrossBoundary Group's Mini-grid Innovation Lab sought to test the impact of lower tariffs on customers: https://lnkd.in/dev7B9US The key findings of the study are: 🔺 When electricity tariffs were cut by 41% over a year, energy use surged by 58% 🔺Low-income customers, who made up 63% of those in the study, benefited the most 🔺Despite lower tariffs, overall revenue didn’t drop as much as expected due to increased usage These findings underscore a promising win for both low-income customers and mini-grid project developers. Inclusive electricity pricing and sustainable operational growth can go hand in hand, driving lasting impact for electricity customers and developers alike!
