In this week’s episode of Anecdotally Speaking, I go solo to share the story of the Phoebus Cartel—a 1920s alliance that limited light bulb lifespans to boost sales and profits. This story, often dubbed "The Light Bulb Conspiracy," is a powerful example of planned obsolescence and raises questions about the long-term impact of business decisions. Today’s story isn’t just about light bulbs. It’s about how decisions reverberate across decades, influencing consumer expectations and even contributing to the rise of conspiracy theories. Reflecting on this century-old agreement, it’s fascinating (and slightly unsettling!) to see how choices made with short-term gain in mind can shape an industry standard that persists long after the cartel disbanded. In our latest podcast episode, we delve into a fascinating discussion that centres around how we see ourselves and how others see us, exploring the interplay between self-perception and social judgment. Here’s a glimpse of what we cover: Fashion as a Vehicle for Confidence: It's intriguing to consider that our choice in attire goes beyond mere aesthetics. It's fundamentally about the confidence that our fashion choices can bestow upon us. It's not just what you wear, but how it makes you feel. Decisions Driven by Values: Ever wondered why someone might choose a specific brand over others, even when there are endless options available? We shared the story of how a Frank Green drink bottle came to live with us. Reflections in Judgment: We often perceive judgment as a direct critique of our actions, but it’s frequently more about the judgers themselves. Our discussion unpacks how judgments can mirror personal insecurities or beliefs, shaping how people view themselves through our actions. The Goals We Set for Others: Why do we sometimes find it easier to set goals for others rather than for ourselves? We explore the implications of this tendency and how it affects both our personal growth and our relationships with others. Caring Without Fear: Our conversation rounds off with a powerful discussion on the importance of engaging deeply and caring boldly, without letting fear hold us back. This episode is an invitation to rethink our interactions and foster authenticity in both how we view ourselves and how we engage with others. Tune in for a dive into personal growth and social psychology that might just change the way you think about yourself and your world. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and reflections! We've all been complainers at some point, but it's crucial to understand the impact it has. Complaining might feel like doing something, but in reality, it accomplishes nothing. It's an ego trip, a quick hit of dopamine that leaves us feeling empty. I discuss the importance of moving beyond complaining to actually contributing to solutions. Whether it's in personal relationships, business, or everyday life, it's about turning complaints into action. This episode is about empowering you to be part of the solution, not just part of the noise. #RickJordan #Podcast #StopComplaining

In my talk for You Are The Media's Creator Day on 25 April - I am sharing quite personal things, so ramping up the confidence a bit to do that... The reason being I share the concept of a visibility buffet which was sparked by this conversation I had with Mai-kee Tsang on my podcast show (episode 27 - available wherever you listen to your pods or music - The Brand Compass Show). Too often we are 'pushed' by 'experts' or not-so-expert people to do ALL THE THINGS. And...it's only months or even years later we realise we were just not cut out for some activities. Humans are not created equal. That's the cool thing about us. It helps if you recognise that though, and ensure you pay homage to your unique strengths, weaknesses and preferences when sorting out what goes on your visibility buffet table. Are you coming to Creator Day? Give me a shout!
