Material success means a lot of different things. In this case we’re talking about sustainability. Thank you Monocle for including fuseproject CEO and Founder Yves Béhar in your recent coverage of City Cortex in Lisbon. As an exercise in pushing the performance and application of materials, Yves Béhar partnered with City Cortex City to explore the intersection between contemporary urban contexts and one of nature's most versatile and sustainable raw materials: cork. “Cork is the perfect material to express these qualities as it is both protective by insulating from sound and the cold, as well as soft and natural in ways that people love. A person can pause for a few seconds, and feel the change created by the material and the form.” For the past 20 years, fuseproject have led the use of sustainable materials in the development of products and services that deliver impactful solutions and raise awareness of critical issues. Our work with Herman Miller, The Ocean Cleanup, and TELO Trucks has helped leaders bring new products and services to market that deepen our understanding of sustainability while advancing ESG initiatives. Some may know this, but I was invited by Arup and the World Circular Economy Forum WCEF to be a panelist at the Built Environment Accelerator Series Event on the 17th of April. I would love to extend my thanks to all involved. Some may call talking too fast, some may call it passion and excitement but you are welcome to take your moment to listen to experts on stage talking about Business Cases in the Built Environment, where we discuss bridging theory into action and what is working, what isn't and what is needed. Some key outtakes from my involvement in the discussion includes; > Lifespans of retail spaces being about 5 years long as opposed to architectural buildings and the whole process from concept, development, refit and closing requires a different way of embedding circular processes in it. > The availability of alternative materials are still quite out of reach at the scale required and while we are feeling the economical uncertainties, companies are unable to invest or partner with companies for sustainable solutions. > While there are drivers, like the European GreenDeal as an example, these are legislative. Policy makers need to push the agenda and make companies responsible and accountable for their planetary degredation. Let me know if you have any thoughts and comments 🌱😊 #circular #sustainability #retail #design Circular Buildings Toolkit - Business Cases for Building Circular - Stream link:

Pioneering sustainability: i-Mesh's commitment to the circular economy. Embarking on a journey towards a sustainable future requires deliberate and well-informed business decisions. In recent years, the circular economy’s values have been expanding more and more, encompassing all facets of our lives. Design is no exception. As the Ellen MacArthur Foundation reports, “design sits prominently at the heart of the circular economy”. The circular economy forms a significant cornerstone of i-Mesh’s philosophy, representing a fundamental departure from traditional linear models that lead to unsustainable resource exploitation and waste accumulation. Embracing a zero-waste philosophy, i-Mesh aims to minimize environmental impact through optimized production processes and eco-friendly practices, conceived to reduce waste and CO₂ emissions. From materials supply to distribution and installation, the circular economy’s principles are woven into the fabric of our production activities. This seamless integration of high-quality design and environmental stewardship exemplifies our commitment to sustainability. 🌟 CREtech Day 2 Highlights 🌟 The second day of the CREtech London conference featured an insightful panel on "Decarbonisation Without Carbon Tunnel Vision," well moderated by Pru Ashby from London & Partners, with valuable insights from Lauren Moss (Vornado Realty Trust), Alexia Laird (Landsec), Ed Green (Grosvenor), Theodore Michell (Bywater Properties), and Mike Darby (Demand Logic). Here are a few more insights about this topic: 📌Avoiding Carbon Tunnel Vision: While cutting carbon emissions is essential, focusing solely on carbon risks overlooks other critical environmental and social impacts. We need a holistic approach that ensures we consider biodiversity, social well-being, and economic viability alongside carbon reduction. 📌 Collaboration and Integration: Decarbonization requires coordinated efforts across the value chain, integrating sustainability into all aspects of property development and management. Cross-industry collaboration is crucial to achieving significant progress. 📌 Technology as an Enabler: Innovative technologies, including data analytics and AI, can help identify inefficiencies, manage resources, and optimize buildings for maximum sustainability. 📌 Balancing Short- and Long-Term Goals: While urgent action is needed, strategies should also align with long-term objectives to prevent unintended consequences and ensure sustainable growth. From my perspective, decarbonization should not be the sole measure of sustainability. A singular focus on carbon may lead to unintended negative impacts in other areas like pollution, ecosystem health, and social equity. Therefore, it's crucial to adopt a comprehensive sustainability strategy. #cretechlondon #proptech #realestateinnovation #cretech #proptech2024 #realestatetech #realestate #proptech #propertymanagement #property #london #uk #london #cre #sustainbility #decarbonisation
