What can biology teach us about creating more regenerative and vibrant human ecosystems? In this short video I explore the fascinating principle of Sympoiesis and how we can apply it to enable social spaces to become more resilient while driving greater social cohesion, environmental awareness and responsible economic activity. Sympoiesis, a term coined by biologist Donna Haraway, highlights the collaborative and interconnected processes within ecosystems. What we'll Explore: Sympoiesis Defined: Understand the biological origins and the inspiring symbiotic relationships, like corals and algae, that embody this concept. Holistic Well-Being: See how interconnected systems foster environments that are more resilient and adaptive. Community Cohesion: Discover how collective creativity and ownership can elevate community projects, strengthen social bonds, and promote inclusivity. Environmental Awareness: Engage with educational programs that emphasize our interconnectedness with the environment, encouraging joint responsibility for conservation. Responsible Economic Impact: Explore how local economies can thrive through collaborative efforts, leading to sustainable practices and resilient marketplaces. What are ways in which you can apply Sympoiesis in your projects and initiatives? As the third pillar, ‘Collaboration’ plays a vital role at BERI. We go beyond studying biodiversity and sharing knowledge; we actively partner with universities, government bodies, and other environmental entities. Our goal is to enhance understanding of biodiversity’s value and inspire a sense of environmental responsibility among individuals and communities. By fostering these partnerships, we aim to empower them to make sustainable choices. Biodiversity Educational Research Initiative (BERI), is an initiative of Thema Collection that aims to protect Sri Lanka's biodiversity through research, awareness creation & capacity-building and collaboration. Our program supports both local and international students in researching to understand the challenges facing our environment and develop effective strategies to address them. #biodiversity #BiodiversityConservation #ThemaCollection #awarenesscreation #collaboration #youth #research @themacollectionsrilanka @wwf @natgeo @discovery

We're diving deep into the complexities of transformative change to boost biodiversity, but it’s not a simple task. Theories of change are not one-size-fits-all — they depend on how each of us sees and approaches the world. As we work on developing these theories, we’re realizing that they’re likely not linear and are deeply context-specific. Transformation isn’t a straight path — it’s shaped by unique perspectives, values, and the specific challenges of each situation. For true change to happen, we need to embrace diverse views and adapt our strategies accordingly. Our IPBES's new Transformative Change report explores how to transform our 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 (ways of thinking and seeing the world), 𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿e𝘀 (ways of organising and governing) and 𝗽𝗿a𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰e𝘀 (ways of acting and relating) to halt biodiversity loss and move towards a sustainable future. 🔍 We built a database of over 𝟰𝟬𝟬 𝗰𝗮𝘀e𝘀 of transformative change from around the world, as well as assessing over 𝟴𝟱𝟬 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀. The results showed that initiatives that involve 𝗺𝘂́𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗽𝗹e 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 and address several causes at once have positive impacts in less than a decade. They also highlighted the key role of the Indigenous knowledge systems, which offer innovative practices and philosophies based on reciprocity and respect for nature This analysis not only maps the problems we face, but also provides evidence that is 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 to find solutions through a holistic transformation of our actions in relation to natural and social systems. 🙌

The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) which includes protecting 30% of land and seas by 2030, has set the stage for action on nature and biodiversity. - However, there is a USD 700 billion gap in annual biodiversity funding between now and 2030. - Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) released the report, "Investing in Nature as Infrastructure The Opportunity" - This report presents high level opportunities for investing in nature as infrastructure (NAI) by using innovative financing instruments. - It is intended as a high-level guide to set the direction and build momentum—particularly among MDBs—of investments in NAI. - It shows that by demonstrating the financial feasibility, impact and scalability of investing in NAI through proof-of-concept projects, MDBs, can work to mobilize private capital towards green infrastructure.
