At the Future Homes Conference last week, we had a fantastic discussion on implementation of Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) in the Nature Recovery breakout session. The question of focus was ‘Can the sector embrace BNG to deliver good outcomes for customer and nature?’ The attendees were asked how confident they are that BNG will be fully embedded in the next five years and what felt would be the critical enablers. Top of the list was sufficient skills and resources in planning authorities and across developer specialisms. Key takeaways included: - BNG is here to stay: 78% of attendees are confident or very confident that BNG will be fully embedded in the next five years. - Beyond BNG: We need to see BNG as part of a wider range of nature recovery measures, ensuring that it benefits both people and wildlife. - Community Engagement: It's crucial to engage with communities and homeowners to foster a positive attitude towards BNG and encourage access to nature. - Skills and Resources: Sufficient skills and resources in planning authorities and across developer specialisms will be essential to meet BNG requirements. - Multifunctional Open Spaces: Open spaces will need to become more multifunctional to support both biodiversity and community needs. - Long-Term Stewardship: Establishing long-term stewardship over 30 years is vital to ensure the sustainability of BNG projects. Stay tuned for our full conference report later this month for a deeper dive into these topics. Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is now mandatory for small development sites across England. 🏡 This means BNG now applies to residential projects with one to nine dwellings on a site of 1 hectare or less and commercial projects with 1,000 square meters or less of floor space. To help you explore the variety of opportunities for BNG within these small sites, we invited three guest experts to share their insights on: 🏘 methods for creating wildlife habitats within small developments 🌱 strategies for incorporating biodiversity from the get-go 🌳 the role of Habitat Banks in helping achieve BNG challenges Read our blog for tips from Julia Baker, Mott MacDonald, and Emma Toovey, Environment Bank on how to support nature’s recovery while creating healthy, sustainable places where people will want to live. https://lnkd.in/eqyrGUfr #BiodiversityNetGain #SustainableDevelopment #NatureRecovery

Statutory BNG has now been rolled out for 'Small Sites' as well as major developments. Meeting BNG requirements on smaller sites often presents a different set of challenges which require careful consideration. These helpful tips are certainly worth baring in mind when working on Small Sites BNG projects!🌿 #StatutoryBNG #SmallSites #NatureRecovery

Now a Natural England blog about #SmallSites and #BNG which seems to be blissfully oblivious to some of the real challenges being faced by LPAs and small site #developers on complying with #BiodiversityNetGain. Some of the tips are good things to do but won't affect the BNG score. Much better guidance and support is needed asap with some real world examples of typical small sites which #planners, developers and their advisors deal with day in day out.

We’re excited to highlight the inspiring stories featured in our digital series with The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), The Nature of Building: Biodiversity & the Built Environment. This series showcases how industry leaders are shaping a sustainable future by integrating biodiversity into the built environment. One standout example is NatureSpace Partnership, transforming how developers like Bloor Homes approach protected species such as great crested newts. By leveraging national risk maps and working with the Newt Conservation Partnership, they ensure projects save time and money while creating high-quality habitats that protect wildlife for the long term. This is just one of the many innovations redefining construction to prioritise nature and development together. San Francisco is leading the way in urban biodiversity and sustainability, integrating nature into its development to enhance community well-being and combat climate change. But it is not easy for smaller cities to do the same. Here some babysteps for cities in developing economies: 1. Invest in Green Infrastructure: Prioritize the creation of parks and green spaces that provide habitats for local wildlife while improving air quality and community health. 2. Engage Communities: Foster partnerships with local organizations and residents to promote ecological stewardship and ensure that initiatives reflect community needs. 3. Implement Nature-Based Solutions: Use natural systems to address urban challenges, such as flooding and heat, by restoring ecosystems and enhancing biodiversity. Let’s first contextualized San Francisco success into local cities perspective and start to build a greener future together with your own twists! #Sustainability #UrbanBiodiversity #CircularEconomy #GreenCities #NatureBasedSolutions

What is the 'Nature City? And how can it help our #MentalHealth? Almost 75% of the human population in Europe lives in an urban area. Continued loss of biodiversity - the variety in plants, animals and other organisms we see in urban hubs - represents a direct threat to people’s health and wellbeing. There is a growing body of evidence showing that time spent interacting with natural habitats increases mental wellness and decreases the effects of stress. And by mimicking natural processes and favouring species that are native to a biogeographical area, we can also create more diverse habitats for animal and plant species and create places for recreation. In this Sweco #UrbanInsight feature, we explore more on the #NatureCity concept, as we invite you to be mindful of the natural potential of your city this weekend... https://lnkd.in/erE5Sg2F #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek #Wellbeing #Nature #Wellbeing #Biodiversity #Nature #BNG #GreenCities #LandscapeArchitecture #Placemaking #PublicRealm #EnvironmentalConsultancy #Ecology #MomentsForMovement #SwecoUK #TransformingSocietyTogether

#GreenTechUpdate Natural England has updated a Green Infrastructure Map to allow people to better identify blue and green spaces in their local area, supporting the government’s commitment to ensure everyone lives within a 15-minute walk of a green space. 🌳 Green spaces are dominated by vegetation, such as parks, woods, or gardens. 🌊 Blue spaces are areas with water features such as lakes, rivers, wetlands, and ponds. The map allows for identification of key areas that need more biodiversity and nature-first infrastructure, which ties directly with #BiodiversityNetGain, targeting biodiversity gains in nature-deprived areas. It allows Local Planning Authorities (LPAs) to set targeted, location-specific #BNG requirements and monitor biodiversity impact, making BNG efforts more effective and accountable. 🔗 Map access: https://lnkd.in/eXmanXzt

Really interesting article from my Vickery Holman colleague Alice Williams on National Landscapes – formally known as Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONBs). Did you know there are 5 of them in #Devon? The name change aligns with ambitious goals to contribute significantly to the international ‘30 by 30’ commitment, which aims to conserve a minimum of 30% of land and sea for biodiversity by 2030. https://lnkd.in/gF26yHHq
