Digital twins are widely celebrated for their ability to replicate real-world systems virtually, enabling real-time monitoring, predictive analytics, and optimization. Originally developed for physical systems like jet engines and buildings, they are rooted in combining physics and data to provide unparalleled insights. But supply chains are different. Unlike a jet engine or factory floor, supply chains are vast, abstract networks of processes, relationships, and behaviors. There is no singular physical system to mirror. This raises a fundamental question: 𝘈𝘳𝘦 𝘥𝘪𝘨𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘭 𝘵𝘸𝘪𝘯𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘴𝘶𝘱𝘱𝘭𝘺 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘴 𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘭𝘺 𝘵𝘸𝘪𝘯𝘴—𝘰𝘳 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘸𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘤𝘦-𝘧𝘪𝘵𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘮 𝘵𝘰 𝘢𝘥𝘷𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘥 𝘴𝘪𝘮𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘈𝘐-𝘱𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘮𝘰𝘥𝘦𝘭𝘴? This is an important topic to explore because supply chains are becoming increasingly critical to business success, with disruptions threatening profitability and resilience. As the concept of digital twins has gained traction in the supply chain world, I’m curious about how we reconcile their origins with the unique challenges supply chains present. Is the term evolving meaningfully, or are we adapting it to fit new contexts without retaining its core essence? That said, there is undeniable value in applying elements of digital twins to supply chains. From providing real-time visibility and enabling scenario planning to delivering predictive insights that mitigate disruptions, these technologies hold significant potential. However, their alignment with the traditional definition of digital twins remains worth questioning. Moving forward, I would like to explore where digital twins align with supply chain needs and where they might fall short. For now, consider: - How does your organization define and implement digital twins? - Are these implementations delivering measurable value, or are they simply following a trend? - What challenges would you anticipate if applying the concept to your supply chain processes? These are questions worth discussing as we collaboratively shape the future of supply chain technology. #supplychain #digitaltwin #technology
