🍬 Ration sugar intake for the first 1000 days of life to reduce chronic diseases 🍎 🔍 A new study by researchers USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences, University of California, Berkeley and McGill University shows that babies born in the UK during sugar rationing in Word War Two faced less risk of chronic disease in later life. Thanks to the 'natural experiment' created by rationing, this study provides powerful evidence for minimising sugar consumption before birth and in infancy. 🍩Sugar is everywhere and research like this not only equips parents with invaluable knowledge, but also calls to food companies and government to ensure healthier options are readily available. 📑Read more here: https://lnkd.in/evsf5_p2 Durk Bosma Eva Hoogstins Suvi Väisänen Lisa Schmit Toyin Akadiri Lauren May

Do Multivitamins make a difference? 🧐 A new research study has dug into the effects of taking multivitamins - a long-debated topic. This research found that people without chronic disease who took a daily multivitamin over a long period had the same risk of dying as those who did not. While the study focused on the connection between multivitamins and longevity, it is important to note that it didn’t assess effects on quality of life. Experts say that while some people may benefit from taking a daily multivitamin, in general it is encouraged to get vitamins and minerals through food. Learn more on this and things to consider when selecting one in the article below ⬇️ #PreventativeHealth #Multivitamins

In the European region, alcohol contributes to nearly 800,000 deaths annually, mostly from noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) such as cardiovascular diseases (40% of cases) and cancer (15% of cases). Despite the huge burden, the true costs of alcohol for countries are often obscured by profit-driven narratives. 🆕 WHO Regional Office for Europe Alcohol Policy Playbook aims to help policy-makers navigate the ever-present debates around alcohol harms & effective policies. It counters the industry’s narrative by presenting scientific research showing that no level of alcohol consumption is safe. Learn more here 👉 https://lnkd.in/ejxWGJRn

Our latest research paper has just been published in Environmental Health Perspective (EHP Publishing). We investigated the association between greenness and hospitalizations for cardiorespiratory diseases in Brazil. We accessed hospital admissions data from 967,771 postal codes (a total of 26,724,624 admissions) covering Brazil for the period between 2008 and 2018. An interquartile range (IQR=0.18) increase in average NDVI was associated with a 17% lower risk of cardiovascular admissions. Interestingly, we found no association between greenness and respiratory admissions. However, in nonurban areas, higher levels of greenness were associated with a lower risk of hospital admissions for both circulatory and respiratory diseases. Thanks to co-authors for the collaboration: Reizane Maria Damasceno da Silva, Mariana Andreotti Dias, Vitória Rodrigues, Francisco Jablinski Castelhano, & Peter James.
