More than a week has passed since returning from the Poultry Science Association annual meeting, providing some time to reflect on the event's impact and insights. The exceptional quality of research presented and the impressive influx of new talent underscore the significant and sustained investment in research programs across the Americas, particularly in the U.S. and Brazil over the past decade. One of the key drivers of innovation has been the robust collaboration between academia and the supply chain. This partnership has fostered a self-sustaining engine to address industry challenges and deliver greater societal value. A prime example is the substantial resources that nutrition and health suppliers have reinvested into research programs and student support over the last two decades, benefiting the entire industry in the long term. This year’s meeting highlighted the expanding critical mass in the realm of animal data science. The discussions reached a new level of sophistication, with more engineers participating and a noticeable increase in student interest and innovation in these areas. A particularly compelling topic that caught my attention was the ongoing research into optimizing amino acid nutrition and nitrogen efficiency. This work holds immense potential for enhancing sustainability and productivity and is an excellent target for precision nutrition efforts. Seeing the engagement, quality, and volume of new talent, along with the relevance of their research, gives us great confidence in the future of the industry. It was truly refreshing! #animalnutrition #animalhealth #precisionfarming BIOFRACTAL

Our June 2024 new paper in Animal Physiology and Animal Nutrition is innovative work to enhance the reproductive status of female tilapia. We looked at the potential of including a benthic diatom as a supplement for the fish at incremental levels up to 6%. Tilapia experience such organisms in the wild which can fortify their nutritional needs. We found the key gonadal indicator hormones such as follicular stimulating hormone and luteinising hormone, as well as progesterone and prolactin were activated by the diatom increase! We observed that several haematological parameters were more responsive in female tilapia fed the diatom treatments at all levels compared to the control group. There was higher fecundity and superior ova and seed quality in fish fed diets containing dried diatom supplements. The research arises from a multidisciplinary group based in Egypt and Saudi Arabia with my role as Adjunct Professor at the University of Galway in Ireland! This study advances the application of sustainable solutions in aquaculture nutrition by exploiting natural biological resources. Studies on broodstock nutrition of fish are fewer than those for on-growing fish and is an area of strategic importance!
