The Expanding Reach of AI The medical imaging AI market has seen significant steady growth in recent years. Currently there are four subspecialties— cardiology, neurology, pulmonology and breast— that dominate the medical imaging AI market. But what about Women’s Health? Exciting improvements are also shaking up routine processes in obstetrics and gynaecology. AI tools can simplify and improve vital workflows for providers such as fetal heart exams, pelvic floor assessments, fetal anatomy identification and 3D fibroid mapping. At GE HealthCare, we are proud to offer innovative AI imaging technology in Women’s Health and will continue to set our focus on further development. Despite the rising demand, there are also some challenges facing the industry: especially in Europe stringent CE mark regulations are slowing down the implementation of AI technology, with only 11 CE mark approvals in Europe compared to 55 new FDA approvals in the US between July 2023 and June 2024. But even within Europe, AI medical imaging technology is successfully applied, and interest in AI imaging has also grown in the Middle East, mainly in Saudi Arabia. What makes AI particularly useful, are comprehensive AI solutions for entire subspecialties, which are also expected to be the future of the industry. #Voluson #Ultrasound #GEHealthCare #VolusonSignature #obstetrics #ultrasoundtechnology #sonography #innovation #AI #AIimaging

Imbalances in medical research are an unfortunate reality. Many groups continue to be under-represented in research, including women, marginalised communities, people of colour, and the entire global South! Because of this, treatment protocols do not properly account for their needs, resulting in sub-optimal clinical care. One example of this is appendicitis, where there is a choice between open surgery and less invasive surgery. Less invasive operations allow patients to recover faster and with a lower probability of complications – improving their quality of life. Unfortunately, in low- and middle-income countries, like South Africa, it can be difficult for doctors to decide between the two operations because the decision is usually based on CT scans or ultrasounds, which are not always available. In these situations doctors often default to open surgery. What this means is that patients end up with a lower quality of life than their counterparts in high-income countries, who would have had the less invasive operation. Healthcare is unequal simply by accident of birth. Michael Brombacher has just published a study investigating how blood tests can inform when less invasive surgery for appendicitis is more appropriate than open surgery. Studies like these allow for better decision-making in settings where expensive imaging is not available, and are important for the advancement of healthcare in these contexts. Thanks for involving me in this work, and I look forward to many more!

China is developing an AI assistant to help brain surgeons. So far it has been tested in 7 hospitals. This tool is much needed for neurological surgery as the stakes are high. It can warn doctors of the risk factors and minimize the chance of failure. This AI model has been trained on Meta’s LLAMA 2.0. For better assistance, it has been fed with medical journals and manuals. The Chinese government supports this initiative, and hopefully the impact can be seen in the neurosurgery field pretty soon. It's still in its early phase and there are challenges like, restricted computing power and lack of high quality data. But if it works out, this could become a potential revolution for healthcare. It can be said that the day isn't far away when doctors will be talking to AI for better clinical decisions. What do you think? #aiinmedicine
