This video is the second part in our breakdown series on William Friedkin's profound possession horror film, "The Exorcist" from 1973. In this video we break down the compelling character work and performance of Detective Kinderman by Lee J. Cobb, the great use of dialogue for exposition-heavy scenes to reveal key information, the major themes in the film and why it’s so moving and profound when both Father Merrin and Karras sacrifice themselves to save Regan, but also for them both to be reunited with God in the afterlife. "A fundamentalist is a person who considers whether a fact is acceptable to their faith before they explore it." - Seth Godin This applies to everything you do beyond religion. Harvard psychology professor, Ellen Langer, pointed out how mindless people are in business; we find the very best way of doing things, and keep doing things that way, even though contexts may change. No matter what you’re doing—eating a sandwich, doing an interview, working on some gizmo, writing a report—you’re doing it mindfully or mindlessly. When you do it mindfully, curiosity is always present. As a result, you might try different ways. When you do it mindlessly, you never question. You become a fundamentalist. Check this insightful short film of Seth Godin created by Nic Askew through his Soul Biography. If you want to learn more about Nic's work, please check the link in the comment. Imagine yourself at the cinema. After a while, you conclude that the film is terrible: no plot, empty dialogues, and bad acting. While your rational self tells you to leave the cinema and do something else, your emotional self reminds you that you already paid for the ticket. The movie will not get better. The money you paid for the ticket is gone. You can't recover it. Save your time! But you can't move from your seat, can you? Why do we continue an activity even if it's rational to give it up? Check out the Sunk Cost Fallacy.
