Antioxidants are like our body's superheroes, protecting our cells and keeping us fit! In addition to fighting free radicals and oxidative stress, they also play a key role in metabolism and weight loss. When it comes to shedding those extra pounds, metabolism is the boss. It's the process that converts food into energy so we can function, including burning those calories! A slow metabolism can be a hindrance to weight loss, while a fast one can make our lives easier. This is where antioxidants come in. First, they help keep our cells healthy, which improves the function of mitochondria, those little energy factories in our cells. With happy mitochondria, our metabolism can increase and burn more calories. Some antioxidants, such as vitamin C, can make cortisol, that stress hormone that makes us eat more, behave better. Less cortisol means less stress and less stress means less desire to overeat. And that's not all, they are also experts at calming inflammation! Chronic inflammation can hinder metabolism and cause us to gain weight. But with the help of antioxidants, we can keep that inflammation under control and let our metabolism do its job properly.
