Strategies for getting every learner climate ready WHAT TO LEARN ? Address cognitive, socioemotional learning and taking action ▶ Contextualized emphasizing the relevance of local knowledge. In the years leading up to the formation of Tumbuh Global, we identified and finally named our: 1) growing discomfort with expressions of Christian mission, aid, and church-based service projects steeped in white savior complex and 2) a growing frustration with Christian progressives too paralyzed by a history of toxic colonialism to engage their global neighbor anew outside of their own context. Neither approach was growing global communities, equalizing power dynamics, or building a more equitable and interconnected world. The Global Teacher™ Method is more than a contextual learning model or immersive travel curriculum. It is a new approach to global engagement for people of faith and moral courage. Tumbuh Guided Global Odysseys™ are contextual immersion experiences rooted in inter-becoming and guided by those with lived experience in the spaces and places we are invited to visit. Connect-Challenge-Explore: Deepening Insights Through Reflection The Connect-Challenge-Explore thinking strategy encourages learners to reflect critically and creatively on their experiences. After the taxidermy session at the CSMVS Museum, this routine guided our thinking: 1. Connect – Relate the new learning to what you already know. What does this remind you of? This helps anchor new information in prior knowledge, building meaningful connections. 2. Challenge – Question assumptions and ideas. What challenges or surprises you about this topic? This step pushes students to critically examine and question the information they encounter. 3. Explore – Investigate further. What more do you want to learn? This inspires curiosity and drives further exploration beyond initial observations. Used after the taxidermy session, Connect-Challenge-Explore allowed us to reflect on the complexities of life, death, and preservation, sparking deeper inquiry and broader thinking. It’s a valuable tool for transforming experiences into rich learning moments. I often think about the profound impact of awe. The impact that extends beyond the individual, shaping our learning environments and contexts. I like to consider all aspects of my learners, their learning, the future of learning, and the joy of learning. The impact of experiencing awe extends far beyond the individual mind and into the very environments and contexts that shape our learning journeys. When we understand the transformative power of awe, we are compelled to re-examine the spaces and dynamics that surround our educational experiences. Why should school buildings and classrooms be mere functional spaces when they could be portals to wonder. With designs inviting natural light, biophilic elements, and thought-provoking artwork. Classroom dynamics fostering enthusiasm, inquiry, and openness can create an environment conducive to awe and intrinsic motivation. At home, parents nurturing a sense of wonder and appreciation can instill a lifelong love of learning. Friendships and peer dynamics embracing curiosity and celebrating discoveries can propel students to explore new frontiers together. Across environments, intentionally cultivating awe creates a self-reinforcing cycle of intrinsic motivation. Recognizing awe's profound impact and embracing its influence empowers lifelong learners driven by curiosity and a deep love for knowledge.
