😎 Some of the best AI inventions draw inspiration from human neurology. Here's another interesting research work in the RAG space. 😢 Current RAG systems encode each new passage in isolation, making it difficult to integrate knowledge across multiple passages. 👉 This limitation is evident in tasks requiring extensive knowledge integration, such as multi-hop question answering, scientific literature review, legal case briefing, and medical diagnosis. 👉 Existing methods often rely on multiple iterative retrieval and LLM generation steps, which are inefficient and sometimes insufficient for complex scenarios. 💡 Enter HippoRAG! HippoRAG addresses these issues by mimicking the hippocampal indexing theory, which involves the interaction between the neocortex (processing and storing actual memory representations) and the hippocampus (holding interconnected indices pointing to memory units). Features: ⛳ HippoRAG transforms a corpus into a schemaless knowledge graph, serving as an artificial hippocampal index. This KG is built by an LLM that processes perceptual inputs, akin to how the neocortex functions in human memory. ⛳ Given a new query, HippoRAG identifies key concepts and runs the PPR algorithm on the KG. The query concepts act as seeds, enabling the system to integrate information across passages efficiently. This process allows for multi-hop reasoning in a single retrieval step. ⛳ HippoRAG demonstrates improvements over existing RAG methods on multi-hop QA benchmarks such as MuSiQue and 2WikiMultiHopQA, achieving up to 20% better performance. ⛳ It is also significantly more cost-effective and faster, being 10-30 times cheaper and 6-13 times faster than iterative retrieval methods like IRCoT, while still maintaining or surpassing their performance. Nico Dosenbach, an associate professor of neurology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, got to find out firsthand what happens to the brain when it's on psychedelics. For science, of course. He got a high dose of psilocybin from his colleagues — what else are friends for? — and as he started tripping, entombed himself in the claustrophobic confines of an MRI machine. At first, Dosenbach actually didn't know whether he'd taken psilocybin or the stimulant Ritalin as a placebo, because his colleagues didn't tell him which one it'd be. That is, until he felt his brain turn into a computer. "I was the computer tablet, and my thoughts were like computer thoughts, which of course makes no sense," Dosenbach told CNN. Part 1: Background: Cardiac point-of-care ultrasound (cPOCUS) can aid in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiac disorders. Such disorders can arise as complications of acute brain injury, but most neurologic intensive care unit (NICU) providers do not receive formal training in cPOCUS. Caption artificial intelligence (AI) uses a novel deep learning (DL) algorithm to guide novice cPOCUS users in obtaining diagnostic-quality cardiac images. The primary objective of this study was to determine how often NICU providers with minimal cPOCUS experience capture quality images using DL-guided cPOCUS as well as the association between DL-guided cPOCUS and change in management and time to formal echocardiograms in the NICU. Methods: From September 2020 to November 2021, neurology-trained physician assistants, residents, and fellows used DL software to perform clinically indicated cPOCUS scans in an academic tertiary NICU. Certified echocardiographers evaluated each scan independently to assess the quality of images and global interpretability of left ventricular function, right ventricular function, inferior vena cava size, and presence of pericardial effusion. Descriptive statistics with exact confidence intervals were used to calculate proportions of obtained images that were of adequate quality and that changed management.
