On my last day in Malaysia, I conversed with an old friend about sustainable procurement. It wasn't long before we stumbled upon a rather disillusioning reality. Despite the loud proclamations of commitment to sustainability and reducing emissions, it seems some of it is lip service. He shared some of the challenges he's come up against, and I couldn't help but be struck by the echoes of a more significant, systemic issue. One of the most glaring obstacles? The attitude towards price. "They always say, 'Let's talk about sustainability,' but price is king when it comes down to the bottom line. It's as if the environment is just another item on the negotiation table, not a crisis we're racing against time to solve." And the quotes he shared... "We need to keep costs down," one manager said as if the health of our planet is a luxury we can't afford. Another quipped, "Let's focus on the now. We can worry about the future later," showcasing a startling short-term mindset in a world crying out for long-term solutions. It isn't just about numbers on a spreadsheet or the next quarter's profits; it's about the kind of world we're leaving behind for future generations. Late payments to suppliers, another issue he highlighted, doesn't only strain business relationships – it erodes trust, potentially leads to a loss of business, and, crucially, paints a company as unreliable and uncommitted in the eyes of regulations, investors and the ever-watchful public eye. Yet, amidst this somewhat grim picture, I refuse to end on a negative note. Though difficult, this conversation is one of many that are starting to happen. They are crucial stepping stones towards change. Yes, the challenges are significant, and the path forward isn't clear-cut, but the fact that we're discussing this, questioning the status quo, and recognising the need for a shift in mindset is a sign of progress. Here's to hoping that these conversations lead to actions, and slowly but surely, a genuine commitment to sustainable procurement practices. ❓How can supplier's sustainability management be strengthened in the long-run if only limited expertise is available in this field? 🤔 ✅ This is OUR practice-proven answer to the challenge we faced in a recent implementation project in Serbia's automotive industry: 🚗 🇷🇸 In response to ever more stringent EU human rights and environmental due diligence (#HREDD) regulations like the German Supply Chain Act (#LkSG) and the EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (#CSDDD), EU buyers need to ensure that they meet their due diligence requirements, whereas Non-EU suppliers need to meet unprecedented demands to maintain business relationships with EU partners. In order to strengthen the sustainability management of Serbian #automotive #suppliers and to ensure #sustainability and #scalability of the project, our approach was to create a market for sustainability consulting services. We specifically addressed the sustainability knowledge gap in Serbia’s automotive industry by training local consultants to support suppliers in meeting new standards. 🗣 “The POTS team introduced HREDD concepts through facilitated experiential learning and peer-to-peer education. CYCLE 1 RECAP] From April 20th to May 11th, 2024, I had the amazing opportunity to participate in the IISE Sessions Cycle 1, where the focus was on Sustainable Supply Chain. Throughout this period, I immersed myself in a wealth of knowledge and gained invaluable insights into how to maintain sustainable supply chain management to continue to satisfy consumers. During the sessions, I learned about sustainability, which highlighted about the importance of sustainable practices for companies to meet long term goals. Additionally, the discussions on product lifecycle gave me a deeper understanding of maintaining compliance with HSE legislation, and the hands-on activities allowed me to apply what I learned practically. One of the most impactful lessons was reverse logistics, which opened my eyes to the possibility of circular economy. A significant part of the experience was the assignment where my group and I cracked a case study about Analyzing Indofood Sustainability on the sub-barrier of inadequate sustainability plans. This assignment enabled me to conduct a deep analysis and brainstorm solutions, and it was incredibly rewarding to see the theoretical knowledge put into action. I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to the mentors Alya Putri, the team Anindya Alya, Muhammad Harsya Pradana, Nabila Clarissa Amanda, Arundati Sekar Kinasih, Radhitya Zaki Hutama, Nashwa Hadi, Puti Raissa Khairani, Audiva Faiza Thara, and IISE Universitas Indonesia for providing us with this incredible opportunity.
