We often discuss the requirements for approaching a building project when asbestos may be present, but you may not realize the severity of asbestos exposure and how it affects people’s everyday lives. Here are a few facts about asbestos you may not know.

Before starting renovation or demolition projects, the Asbestos Abatement Program mandates the following steps: ⬇️ 1️⃣Hire a licensed asbestos consultant to conduct a comprehensive inspection to identify types and quantities of asbestos-containing materials. Consultants must be licensed by the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR). 2️⃣Submit a Notice of Asbestos Renovation or Demolition to the DEP at least 10 working days before beginning any renovation or demolition work. This notification should detail the asbestos involved, disposal methods, and contractor information, even if no asbestos is found during inspection for demolitions. 3️⃣Employ a Florida-licensed asbestos contractor to remove regulated asbestos-containing materials above a specified threshold. 4️⃣Dispose of asbestos-containing materials at a landfill authorized to handle such materials. Pink insulation is made from fiberglass, which does not contain asbestos. However, in this instance, a fire caused the ceiling of this home to collapse, covering the floor in insulation and other debris. Under the insulation, there may be asbestos containing materials that will need to be tested before clean-up and removal. Things like flooring, floor mastic and joint compound from the ceiling are all materials that could contain asbestos.
