Fundraiser’s Dinner Etiquette Tip #4: Utensils You find yourself at dinner, but the place setting is much more complex than you are used to. You don’t want to make a bad impression on your dinner companions. Where do you start with all of the various utensils? Here are the main considerations to keep in mind: 🍽️Start on the outside, and work your way in. Utensils for the main course will be closest to the plate. 🍽️If soup is served, the spoon will be on the outermost right side, since it will be the first course of the meal. 🍽️ Dessert forks and spoons will be placed at the top of the place setting. 🍽️ Wine glasses will be arranged from right to left in the order that they will be used. The water glass will be the inmost glass, placed right above your knives. What formal dining situations have you encountered with donors? #DinnerEtiquette #petrusdevelopment #fundraising #development #faithbasedfundraising #fundraisingdinner #EtiquetteTips

Like bourbon? See below… Dear Fellow Bourbon Lovers – After a year hiatus, I am happy to announce the triumphant return of The Great Bourbon Exchange – 2024 Edition! Like a phoenix (and the Detroit Lions), the exchange has risen from the ashes… I am introducing a few new wrinkles this year that will make the exchange fun and more streamlined to manage. The exchange is a great holiday tradition matching fellow bourbon lovers 1:1 with one another to celebrate the season, make new connections, and experience a new bottle introduced to you by another bourbon lover. Here’s how it works… 1. Click https://lnkd.in/ehGWM35W to make an end of year donation (if you are able to) to the Foundation Fighting Blindness. 2. THEN, click https://lnkd.in/eygqvYgx to join The Great Bourbon Exchange private group on Elfster by Friday, December 13th! Fill out all the information including your “ship to” address (skip the step asking you to create a “wishlist”). On December 14th I will initiate the match, pairing you with another member of the group to exchange with. All matches will be randomized, so get excited to make a new bourbon buddy! Pick a bottle that is meaningful to you, has a special story to it, or is something you just happen to like. Ship your bottle to your buddy with a note (in the package or via email) sharing why you picked what you did. Ensure your bottle arrives to your bourbon buddy no later than New Year’s Eve. All bottles being exchanged must be at least $50 retail. Some of you go hog wild, and I love that, but please ensure you adhere to this minimum. Like always, this email thread will be filled with fun stories, banter and news about the exchange, as will our group page on Elfster. Remember, if you purchase a bottle locally, or have the bottle you plan to exchange in your possession, shipping your bottle via UPS or FedEx is easy. Just be sure to package it yourself at home before arriving to ship and be a little loose with the details on what you are shipping - olive oil for example 😊. If you prefer, purchasing and shipping via Caskers, Frootbat, Cask Cartel, Wooden Cork, or the like is also an easy option and they will drop ship. *** NEW THIS YEAR – if we raise more than $5,000 collectively for the Foundation Fighting Blindness, then whoever is matched with me will receive a very special bottle. Like, a really special one (think impossible to get allocated kind of special)… but to be eligible to be my match, you must have made at least a $50 donation to the Foundation Fighting Blindness. Like Santa, I will be checking the list twice! If you didn’t donate, I will match you with someone else, so no worries, but to get my bottle you have to have made a $50 donation. FEEL FREE TO SHARE THIS INVITE WITH FRIENDS, FAMILY, COWORKERS ETC. The more the merrier! - Jason Menzo

The non-profit community organizing ecosystem has many contradictions, acknowledged and grappled with daily. Unpacking these contradictions is a topic for another day. However, I firmly believe that at their best, non-profit base building organizations foster spaces where working-class people convene to discuss shared problems, find solutions, and collectively challenge power structures via direct action. The tenants in this article exemplified precisely that. Undoubtedly, further long-term efforts are necessary to strengthen relationships and connect the tenants of this particular Bronx building with the broader movement to de-commodify housing. NYCC takes immense pride in accompanying these tenants, creating the space for them to take action and secure the reinstatement of their cooking gas after a 16-month outage, thereby expanding the base of the movement advocating for housing as an intrinsic human right. https://lnkd.in/eR54Ph6d

A Deeply Personal Appeal for Our Children and Community It is with a heavy heart that I share the devastating impact of the Government’s new strategy for the Ka Ora Ka Ako school lunches. For over a decade, Koha Kai has stood by our most vulnerable—children facing food insecurity, the elderly living in isolation, farmers struggling in remote areas, and countless others who depend on our support. The Numbers Don’t Add Up: - 236,000 children are presently receiving Ka Ora Ka Ako lunches (as of March 2024). This new arrangement at $3 per meal would mean a staggering cost of $148 million annually, not the previously estimated and now publicised $85 million contract. - Each meal costs $3, but what does that really provide? A lunch weighing less than half a pound of butter or an apple. Can this truly nourish our tamariki and set them up for success? Are Rural Schools Being Forgotten? How are our rural schools being catered for under this new plan? For two years, Koha Kai has travelled 140km daily to deliver meals to remote communities that no other supplier would serve. These trips weren’t just about school lunches; they are also lifelines for the elderly and disabled, in remote rural communities. The fresh meals we deliver allow these vulnerable people to remain in the communities they’ve always called home. The Fallout: Losing the Ka Ora Ka Ako contract threatens everything Koha Kai stands for. Our community gardens, Life skills programmes, and inclusive opportunities for rangatahi—everything that makes Murihiku vibrant and resilient—is now at risk. Without this support, Koha Kai may no longer exist, and with it, the heart of our community’s support system. We must acknowledge some existing suppliers will retain parts of their contracts until December 2025. After this date, the new arrangement will take over entirely, creating a monopoly that funnels even more funds offshore and leaving local organisations like ours struggling to continue. Attention Press and NZ Leaders: This is not just a local issue—it’s a reflection of how we value our children and our communities on a national stage. I urge the New Zealand Press and senior Government Officials to spotlight this critical issue. Together, we can advocate for a system that prioritises health, community, and sustainability over profit margins. Stand with Us to Make A Difference: Do we want to support local organisations that enrich our communities, or do we want to channel hundreds of millions annually to an offshore catering company that has won this contract? The choice impacts our children’s futures and the very fabric of our society. Let’s stand together for Ka Ora Ka Ako. Let’s ensure our tamariki have the nourishment they need to thrive and our communities remain strong and united. #KaOraKaAko #CommunityFirst #SupportLocal #NutritionMatters #RuralSupport #JoinUs #NewZealand https://lnkd.in/gc46E4a3

The work this group is doing is amazing... and is #sustainability at its finest. Hats off to the efforts of Penn State's Food Recovery Network! We have both a food insecurity challenge in this region and across Pennsylvania. Our students also face food insecurity; a study done in 2022 noted that 14% of Penn State students didn't eat for a day or more: https://lnkd.in/ebv3rw2V At the same time , food waste is a huge issue. While we compost much of the food leftovers from Penn State's University Park campus, it would be much better if it is eaten! Approximately 30-40% of food grown, transported and cooked is then wasted, resulting in a huge greenhouse gas impact. Lots of great work underway- and plenty more to do.
Founded in 2014 and reestablished in 2023, FRN at Penn State has been making waves in the fight against food insecurity and waste. This semester, they recovered over 10,000 meals and expanded their efforts to include recoveries from all five Penn State dining halls alongside Beaver Stadium, the second-largest college football stadium in the U.S. With four pickups per week, FRN at Penn State donates more than 350 meals weekly to local hunger-fighting organizations.🍽️✨ “Our goals and vision for the future focus on growth, education, and sustainability as we continue to make an impact,” shared a chapter leader. Looking forward, FRN at Penn State plans to recover food at major events, ensure environmentally friendly practices, and foster stronger community connections. “In addition to operational support, FRN National has played a vital role in volunteer engagement,” Penn Stated shared. “Their financial backing has allowed us to enhance our biweekly general body meetings with food, drinks, and branded merchandise, creating a more welcoming and rewarding experience for our members. This support has been key to strengthening our community and ensuring the continued success of our mission.” We are so glad to have you back in the network and can’t wait to see all of the positive impact you’ll make in the future! 💚 ♻️
