The mood in the German games industry is not really good, according to the new industry barometer from game – Verband der deutschen Games-Branche e.V.. It really is “an unfortunate irony of our modern moments that we seem to have a lot of games and no room for play”. Whenever I work with teams using the COOL metaskills framework Casper Oelofsen and I came up with, (Courage, Openness, Observing and Lightness), I feel that the place to start is with Lightness. Ironically, it takes a lot of Courage and Openness for adults to step into Lightness. We have been socialised to believe that play, imagination, and humor are immature. These essential qualities of being human have mostly been excluded from our work lives. Work (espacially in large organisations) has mostly become a place for games not play. We become masters at mind games, political games with winners and losers. These games rarely creates new potential, they are rarely generative. You definitely don’t want to fail at these corporate games. Play is different … Play is embodied. Play takes us into our imagination (and vice versa). Play teaches us that failure is not the end of the world. Play opens new potential. One of the reasons I co-created the Somatic Waysfinding journey with Mirjam van Vliet is to reconnect with our bodies and our imagination. (https://lnkd.in/dc_epjiS) Uncertainty can feel scary, but If we can playfully find our way into the unknown we connect with possibility and everything feels lighter. And I, for one can do with more Lightness!

Play is uncircumscribed, spilling beyond frameworks. Indeed, it is the restlessness of the frame. When we build walls around play, we create games. But it is an unfortunate irony of our modern moments that we seem to have a lot of games and no room for play. Bayo Akomolafe

We should call high end mobile games triple-M (MMM) to distinguish what we mean, not unlike calling high end PC/console games triple-A, or best in class indie games triple-I.
