Hello Connections, I had the privilege of presenting a paper titled "Mechanical Energy Storage Machines (Mechanical Batteries)" at the National Conference on Emerging Trends in Automotive and Mechanical Sciences, organized by the automobile department of our college. This conference served as a prestigious platform for academia and industry experts to discuss and explore advancements in automotive and mechanical engineering. My presentation focused on the innovative concept of Mechanical Energy Storage Machines, also known as mechanical batteries, which represent a promising alternative to conventional energy storage solutions. These machines harness mechanical energy through various mechanisms such as flywheels, springs, or compressed air, offering sustainable and efficient energy storage options for diverse applications in the automotive sector. The conference provided a stimulating environment for exchanging ideas, receiving constructive feedback, and networking with peers and professionals passionate about shaping the future of automotive technology. Fun Fact Thursday Over the past few years there has been a step change in much larger LPBF machines being released, which now exceed 500mm cube. This poses an interesting point... is bigger better? For us at Materials Solutions - a Siemens Energy Business and Siemens Energy we have a fleet of 27 EOS M400s, with a chamber size of 400mm cube. Within the 150 part numbers we have qualified for internal production, only a handful utilise the full build volume for a single part. The 'sweet spot' for us has been minimising the build time per part factor by nesting as many of a single part number on a build as possible. This allows us to drive down cost of manufacturing, with the built in benefits that additive offers. Our Swirlers are a prime example of this with between 16-20 parts per platform. In our world smaller and efficient has been the key unlocking the wider benefits of additive.
