I've learned from Bill Gates's page that today is also #WorldBookDay. This reminded me of an article I wrote back in 2013 about the Reading experience in the IT era, where I included Bill Gates's famous photo from 1994 showcasing how much paper would be needed to contain as much information as a CD can hold. I also recall presenting that article to librarians from all regions of Armenia a year or two later. They seemed almost eager to push back against me, as if I were the harbinger of a revolution in e-reading. I fully empathized with their frustration, though. The funny thing is, 11 years later, there have been no major changes in the industry, and paper books still dominate the market, just as I predicted. I believe tradition and sentimentality play a significant role: holding a book in your hand is often considered an intellectual act, while holding a gadget doesn't convey the same intention as clearly because it's a multipurpose item. Despite this, I still carry the same level of excitement for e-reading as I always have because of the way it enhances the reading experience. When in the same 2013 I read Jason Merkoski's "Burning the Page" book, I couldn't resist reaching out to him on LinkedIn. Jason responded to my message with some nice and encouraging words, saying, "Ebooks truly are revolutionary, aren't they?" Absolutely YES! There are all the practical benefits of e-reading, but there's also a philosophical aspect that makes the experience fulfilling for me. I'm referring to the non-linear, hyperlinking reading experience. Let me quote from my article (apologies for any lack of professional translation into English): "The hypertext phenomenon originated not in the technological world, but in literature, in the middle of the 20th century. Borges was a great devotee of the vision of the hypertext future: he formulated the idea of one common book or universe-library, and the non-mystical, but very practical and simple realization of that idea is offered by electronic reading. [Quoting Borges] 'They speak (I know) of the feverish Library whose chance volumes are constantly in danger of changing into others and affirm, negate and confuse everything like a delirious divinity.' [End of the quote]. I should not be mistaken, claiming that in some sense I already have the 'feverish library' that Borges talked about. Of course, I mean my Kindle reader. Borges himself was greatly influenced by the Irish engineer and philosopher John William Dunn's model of multitemporal reality, according to which all three dimensions of time (past, present, future) are eternal. It is this innovative format of temporal perception that lies at the heart of computer novels and the future of e-readers." What are your thoughts on the future of reading in the digital age? I'd love to hear any thought on this!
