First day here at IFAT is over. The event has certainly lived up to its reputation as the biggest and best water related tradeshow on the planet. From a sensor point of view, have not been seen anything with that “oh wow factor” yet , I plan on taking a trip over to one of the other halls where there is a start-up and innovation sector. At a brief glance it does look as though there are some exciting bio sensor companies just coming to market. More on that tomorrow. One thing, which is definitely topical, that I did see, is an ultra low level, online, total ammoniacal nitrogen analyser. It is in use with several German water companies monitoring ammonia levels in rivers down to as low as 10 ppb, yes that’s right per billion. No, it is not portable, it does use reagents and so it is highly unlikely to be deployed any time soon upstream and downstream of a CSO, but and this is an important but, this type of technology could form an important extra layer when accurate “state of our rivers” monitoring is needed. Installed in the back of a 4 x 4 it could be used as part of a an event investigation.

Chemicals are essential but can have impact on our health and the environment. At TNO, we’re leading the way with the Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) approach. By integrating safety and sustainability from the start, we create safer, more sustainable products. Our SSbD approach includes: 📝 Defining design criteria: For the intended use of the chemical, material or product 🔍 Quick screening: On all SSbD aspects (health, safety, sustainability, functionality and cost) 📊 Visualisation: Integration of impact on SSbD aspects and visualisation of trade-offs ⚖️ Decision making: Based on transparent visualisation and scenario testing SSbD is a great – but challenging – concept. Looking into all SSbD aspects can be overwhelming. We aim to simplify SSbD and help companies to implement safety and sustainability considerations early in their innovation process. Together, we can contribute to products that are SSbD. I would like to invite you to join our webinar on October 1. Meet experts Michiel van Kuppevelt (VNCI), Wouter Fransman (TNO) and myself, discover more about implementing SSbD and find out about other companies’ reflections. Looking forward to see you or watch on-demand. Sign up 🔗 https://tno.to/lak

Honored to deliver a keynote today at the IWA NRR Conference in Brisbane, Australia. My presentation, Continuous Flow Densification: Beyond Granulation, focused on rethinking densification in wastewater treatment. I shared four key insights: • Continuous flow aerobic granular sludge is not the goal • Existing assets are opportunities, not liabilities • Unexpected synergies lead to breakthroughs • Open innovation amplifies potential Grateful to the organizers and attendees for fostering such engaging discussions.
