“It’s not just about adults not understanding anymore. Many young people are finding solutions devised by adults to address our youth mental health crisis are actively harming them.” Poignant words from Ananas Mustafa, Director of Programs with Colorado Youth Congress (CYC) and member of our current youth wellbeing community of practice here at Gary focused on identifying more avenues for youth to offer peer-to-peer support to one another. The research on this subject is clear: Not only do youth-to-youth peer support strategies help young people in distress, they also benefit the individuals providing support. What’s more, young people are often in some of the best positions to assist their peers, as they can often identify signs of struggle, understand the community issues their peers are grappling with, and notice warning signs before adults. With that research at heart, the learning agenda we worked through this cohort to establish has been simple: What if adults got out of the way and gave young people more opportunities to support themselves? The learnings have been illuminating, and it's been an honor to work alongside all six members of this cohort, which include Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colorado, The Center on Colfax, GALS Denver, Struggle Of Love Foundation and Wezesha Dada Center Learn more about the work and key early takeaways here: https://lnkd.in/gCvPk5K3 #mentalhealthmonth #youthmentalhealth #youthwellbeing #peertopeersupport #earlyintervention #prevention

Congrats to Kenny Thomas and our team at Neolth for co-authoring this Op-Ed about youth mental health! As Mental Health Ambassadors in New Mexico, Kenny & I have been working to raise awareness & reduce stigma. We're focused on youth-led initiatives and talking openly about mental health. A few things we've learned: 👉 It’s crucial to keep pushing for collaborative actions. Real co-design means more than having a few focus groups. It means collaborating on a daily basis to prioritize youth voice. 👏 Centering youth voices should go beyond co-designing products. This means collaborating with youth on public health campaigns, intervention programs, and even the national discussion about social media. 💪 Together our impact is exponential. As health professionals we have expertise in prevention and treatment, but young people have expertise in their own lived experiences. Those make for a powerful combination. Thanks to the Albuquerque Journal for publishing this and to the community for all their support & partnership! So much more to come. #MentalHealth #Youth #CoDesign

Youth engaged for mental health - A framework for youth participation under the WHO Pan-European Mental Health Coalition The framework was developed to answer a strong and consistent request from WHO pan-European Coalition members that young people be actively engaged in activities undertaken by WHO which impact young people’s mental health and well-being across the European Region, whether it be policy or guidance development, research or programming. Young Coalition members initiated development of the framework to ensure that the active participation of young people was carried out in a way that was consistent, meaningful and, most importantly, underpinned by what young people want and need to feel safe and empowered to engage. Hoping to provide an ear and generate discussion with other Nova Scotian parents and caregivers who support someone with OCD. The isolation, the feeling of helplessness, the sense of failing your child - it doesn't go away, but it can become more manageable - talking about it with others who can relate is a great stepping stone to getting there. Please share with anyone in your network who you think might be interested. I’m honored to be co-leading (with Nanette Shroff) a brand-new OCD Parent & Caregiver Peer Support Group, made possible with the vision of our founder Julie MacDonald, Ph.D. and suppport of the Canadian Mental Health Association, NS Division and the Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia. This couldn’t come at a better time, as October 13-19 is International OCD Awareness Week! This is a global effort to dispel myths, break stigma, and raise awareness about OCD. If you’re a parent or caregiver of a child with OCD, you know how overwhelming and isolating the journey can be. This group is here to offer a safe, supportive space where you can connect with others who truly understand. 📅 Our first meeting is happening on Thursday, October 17th, from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Zoom. We’ll be meeting monthly, and I truly believe this group will be a lifeline for many. If you or someone you know could benefit from this, please don’t hesitate to reach out or help spread the word. 🩵 Together, we can support one another and navigate this journey. Spaces still open! As a parent, we always want what’s best for our children, but sometimes it can be hard to know what is the right way to support them, especially when it comes to the heavy unexpected things that can pop up in life, like suicidal thoughts or self-harm. But the reality is that there often is no one right way to respond. So what can we do? In this workshop, we spend two sessions unpacking the difficult situations and disclosures that might arise and explore, in a non-judgmental and safe environment, how to meet our kids where they are at and provide the best support we can offer based on your family dynamics. In this workshop you can expect to cover: - Understanding child and youth brain development and how this impacts coping and stress responses - Creating and fostering resilience and self-esteem - How to respond and support disclosures - Coping skills and self-care skills for kids, youth, and parents/caregivers This workshop will include handouts, community resources, and the opportunity to ask questions. It is meant for parents and caregivers of any age looking to gather either preventative information or additional information. Please keep in mind that this workshop is not intended to be a support group or psychotherapy group. Referrals can be provided for further support. Our commitment to providing youth with equitable access to mental health support extends beyond one organization or one month. Read our joint statement, alongside other youth mental health companies, about our collaborative commitment for change: Mental Health Awareness Month is about moving from awareness to action this year. As leaders in youth behavioral health, we’re uniting in our shared commitment to taking action on youth mental health—not just one month a year—but 365 days a year. This year's Mental Health Action Day theme, 'Dedicate One Hour to Connection,' underscores a simple truth: feeling connected to, seen, and understood by a trusted adult is one of the most potent strategies for supporting youth mental health. Strong relationships are proven to improve youth well-being, and those same relationships enable early intervention, which is vital for mitigating the downstream impacts on unmet mental health needs. For youth and the caring adults in their ecosystem alike, it’s important to remember that it's normal to experience mental health challenges and okay to talk about the need for support in overcoming those challenges. So, take a moment to connect today. Check-in on a student, friend, or colleague. And check in with yourself. But, beyond the month and moment, remember this conversation about mental health going on all year long and remind each other that no one has to face their struggles alone. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of young people and create a brighter future for all. 💙 #UnitedforChange #MentalHealthAwareness #TakeAMentalHealthMoment #MentalHealthMonth
