RAGs to Riches: Resilience And Grit to Riches. Riches are the results of effort. I've found that the most resilience and grit that I've needed to exert in certain areas of my life have led me to the greatest riches I've been blessed with. Finding my Queen and being the King she deserves has required me to be more resilient than I have ever been, pushing forward with more grit than ever. Raising our 5 wonderful children has required the both of us to be more resilient than we've ever been together, pushing forward with more grit than we did when it was just us. Going through this layoff and keeping the lights and all the utilities on is taking more resilience and grit than I could've imagined. But I know I can't get the "riches" until the effort with resilience and grit are executed consistently. I've been fortunate to start with Carmax a couple of weeks ago to build my sales skills and make some income while I continue my hunt for my next big role as a Leader in the Learning Experience or Customer Experience world. I see the many #opentowork banners across LinkedIn and my heart goes out to all of you as we keep pushing to start our next big role. Once we do, we'll have one great RAGs to Riches story to tell. Until then, own your growth and development by finding ways to keep evolving with purpose. Working at Carmax is allowing me to grow industry skills that I'll be able to use in my next role while also giving me an avenue to continue getting healthier by hitting my minimum daily goal of 10,000 steps or more. I've already lost 10 pounds in the last couple weeks while achieving company goals as a new Sales Consultant. But the truth is, any work that serves others can bring you joy. I joke with my clients when presenting potential franchise opportunities, because some of them just aren’t “sexy” businesses. Owning a lawn care service doesn’t sound exciting to most people. But if you look at it through the lens of service, it can be a fulfilling enterprise. You provide yourself and your employees with an income to care for your families. You provide a service to your customers that allows them time to pursue their own desires, or takes care of a task they cannot physically do. You contribute to your local economy and help grow the community you serve. So whatever work you choose to do, find joy in it. I’ve known my husband for 32 years and we just celebrated our 30th anniversary this past August. He introduced me to the Green Industry while we were dating, working at various companies doing a wide range of duties, learning and experiencing a lot along the way. I always known him to be a dedicated man and loyal to his passion for doing what he loves. It wasn’t until he came home from work one day to inform me that the company he worked for had sold. We were in a dire financial situation at the time with 3 kids, our youngest only being 1 at the time. Steve thought things through before he came to me of the news. Option 1, stay with the new company and take a pay cut or option 2, start his own plant health care company. We were in pre-foreclosure already and barely had money to put food on the table so either option was a risk of us losing everything. So in 2008 with a lot of prayers and faith, we took on a new adventure and started Contender’s Tree & Lawn Specialist. I have seen first-hand the passion, knowledge and grit Steve already had working in the industry, so it was never a doubt in my mind. I believe in my husband and trust that he could start a company in the worst economic times and make it a success. Fast forward 10 years, Contender’s has become a successful 3-million-dollar company and on its way to continue growing. Then one day Steve comes home and tells me about an opportunity he was offered- to buy an existing microbe and fertilizer distribution/consulting company called Banner Sales. Absolutely!!! I believe in you, and I know you can make it bigger and better. So, we start the painstaking process of organizing ourselves to make this big financial purchase. Just one day left before we sing the loan papers, Covid hit, and everything shuts down. What a devastating blow to our morale. Fast forward 4 years, Banner Sales and Consulting is a successfully thriving company in multiple states with 6 employees. Steve Martinko has a proven record of starting with very little and turning it into something big with his years of experience and knowledge to show for it. Contender’s is celebrating 15 years of being a small family business while Banner Sales is close to 5 years under his new ownership. I love you Steve Martinko and I am so grateful that God has blessed you with the drive and passion to love what you do, also to love and tolerate me. Automotive Group is CLOSED on Monday in observance of Memorial Day. Are you surprised? Yes, we know Memorial Day is a day when many dealerships (including those all around us) have "BIG SALES", cookouts, games and parties. Well.... we do not. Why? In our family we were raised that days such as Memorial Day and Labor day are about something much bigger than car deals. Memorial Day is about remembering and honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice rather than a discount or savings. Do you agree? We have chosen to be CLOSED on Memorial Day despite the potential lost sales. #peopleoverprofit At our dealership if we (ownership) are not going to be at the dealership on a holiday then neither will our staff.
