Dick Fosbury and the most successful flop of all times What a privilege to be in Paris during these phenomenal #JOPARIS2024! While attending an athletics event in the #StadedeFrance, I reflect on the legacy of #DickFosbury (1947-2023) and his gold medal in the high jump in Mexico 1968 Olympic games. Fosbury pioneered a revolutionary technique of high jump that allowed him to win the gold medal and that was totally different from the prevalent straddle technique of that time. At start, it was ironically called “the Fosbury flop” looking at the way he landed on his back, but it was all but a flop! Over time, most athletes adopted and improved his technique that is since then prevalent in the high jump. For that reason, #DickFosbury is considered one of the most influential athletes of all times. What I find amazing is how he developed this revolutionary technique during his college years: he found lots of coaches advising him to jump “the orthodox way” and focusing on teaching him the straddle technique. He kept practising both ways, until the day that results made clear that he performed better using his own style. His coach Berny Wagner gave up trying to correct him and began helping him to refine his technique. The path to the Olympic gold medal was cleared and the biggest revolution in high jump had just started. Today, I want to celebrate the end of an era as Graham Moor steps down as CEO of the Roofing Association of New Zealand. It’s hard to truly capture the depth of his contribution to our industry and the mark he’s left over so many years. Within my very first month in this role, Graham called just to let me know he was always there to lend an ear if I ever needed it – and I did. From advocacy challenges to life’s highs and lows, he has been one of my go-to’s for guidance, wisdom, and support. The role of an Association Executive can be challenging and, at times, lonely. But Graham has always answered the phone – without fail. He hasn’t just been a source of advice and strength; he’s become a mate who genuinely cares. Our association and the wider industry owe him a great deal, as he has consistently advocated for others whenever possible. Personally, I am so grateful for the friendship we’ve built. To step down after years of tireless service, knowing that you’ve made such a significant impact, is something that deserves true recognition. So I want to acknowledge you, Graham, on behalf of myself, SARNZ- Scaffolding, Access & Rigging NZ Inc. and the NZ Specialist Trade Contractors Federation, for your unwavering dedication, commitment to doing what’s right for the industry, and the bloody big heart you put into everything you do. “He aha te mea nui o te ao? He tangata, he tangata, he tangata.” What is the most important thing in the world? It is people, it is people, it is people. I’ve heard you say this many times, and that’s exactly what you’ve embodied as a leader – putting people first, building meaningful connections, and showing true care for those around you. Your leadership wasn’t just about guiding an industry, it was about uplifting the people within it. I couldn’t think of a better legacy to leave behind. Ngā mihi nui, Graham. I watched my 3-year-old daughter receive her first fencing lesson from her grandfather this morning. It was more than just a lesson in fencing; it was a moment of legacy, of passing down tradition and values from one generation to the next. This reminded me of the deep connections we forge, not only within our families but also within our businesses. In business, we often speak of growth, strategies, and ROI. Yet, the essence of what makes a business truly stand out and withstand the test of time often boils down to the traditions and legacies we create and uphold. This is not only in the products we develop or the services we offer but in the values we instill in our teams and the experiences we provide to our customers. Tradition in business mirrors the lessons learned and the standards set by those who walked the path before us. It's about maintaining the core principles that have proven successful, much like the fundamental techniques and movements in fencing passed down through generations. It's a reminder that some practices are timeless, serving as the foundation upon which we build and innovate. Legacy, on the other hand, is what we leave behind - the imprint of our actions and decisions. It's in the culture of our organizations, the mentorship we provide to our employees, and the lasting impact we have on our customers' lives. Just as my daughter's fencing lessons are not merely about the sport but about instilling discipline, focus, and a sense of heritage, our business legacies are about the values we embed into the very fabric of our organizations. It's vital to recognize that our roles extend beyond the confines of profit margins and market shares. We are the custodians of our businesses' traditions and the architects of their legacies. By consciously cultivating a culture that honors our core values and by creating experiences that resonate deeply with our customers and employees, we do more than just conduct business; we build enduring institutions. Let's take inspiration from the rich traditions and legacies of our personal lives to infuse our businesses with a sense of purpose, continuity, and lasting value. How much local, state, and federal funding, tax credits, or other government benefits or incentives did the project receive? 2. What is the affordability period for each project? Is the affordability period permanent and in perpetuity? 3. What guarantees exist have your local, state, and federal government officials obtained in writing that rents will not go up or that tenants will not be displaced or evicted after the "affordability period expires?
