Risky Business: Navigating Risk Aversion in an Autonomous World Matt McLelland, VP of Sustainability and Innovation, Covenant joined Grayson Brulte for a thought-provoking, unstructured yet insightful conversation about the complex relationship between risk aversion and the development of autonomous trucks. Could the fear of risk hold back the adoption of autonomous tucks? If society had the same fear of risk level that it has today, would we have ever had the space program or the commercial airplane? It's these questions that have to be considered in this current risk adverse environment. 🎧 Listen on Apple Podcasts: https://lnkd.in/dN-_HYY8 🎧 Listen on Spotify: https://lnkd.in/dZmijwMq 🎥 Watch on X: https://lnkd.in/dX7GUbcb 🎥 Watch on YouTube: https://lnkd.in/dnzpTf6B #RoadToAutonomy #AutonomyEconomy #Risk #RiskManagement #AutonomousTrucks #AutonomousVehicles #Podcast

Every single day - beginning with the moment you get out of bed and take your first step - you are balancing a complex series of decisions about your tolerance for risk. From taking a shower to choosing the food we eat to the transportation modes we choose to the hobbies we pursue - we are always subconsciously making the decision - "is this choice worth the risk"? This podcast with my good friend Grayson Brulte / The Road to Autonomy® was a lot of fun, although incredibly unstructured and admittedly rambling at times. Our goal was to discuss the balance between risk and innovation - specifically how our growing aversion to risk is affecting how we look at advances in everything from medicine to autonomous vehicles. Grayson and I juxtapose how different cultures look at risk, how prior historical periods tolerated more risk, and how the rise in litigation is changing the pace of innovation and change. This would be an easy podcast to take any single comment out-of-context without listening to the entire thing and we certainly don't want the listener to think we don't value safety and human life. But we give specific examples of how our aversion to risk slows progress, how our role as consumers plays a significant role in the speed of innovation, and in the end we attempt to address finding the balance between regulation / safety / responsibility and progress. The world isn't a safe place - but we have to get out of bed every day and be productive. What is the balance? Our goal was to challenge each other, and the listener, to think about what it means for any technology to strike an acceptable balance between progress and safety. Look forward to the comments..... (note - this topic could just as easily be about medicine as autonomy) #autonomous #risk #risktolerance #automomousdriving #av #autonomousvehicles #riskaversion

We accept that driving a car comes with risk, and sometimes (too often) people are hurt or die. Except... that we don't accept that at all when a computer is behind the wheel. Will autonomous vehicles ever be safe enough for society to accept them? Listen in as I discuss this topic (and many more) with Emil Michael and Leah Mahtani in today's delightful episode of The Startup Podcast Reacts.
