"The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place." – George Bernard Shaw It's unbelievable, but true, how almost 80 percent of all issues have their origins in a communication gap. Be it family issues, client and service provider disconnects, broken team dynamics, inter government or even cross border conflicts. Sometimes, we struggle to explain our own perspective. Other times, we fail to understand the perspective of others. And often, it’s a mix of both. Given how foundational communication is, it's surprising to see how little focus formal education or even corporates place on strengthening communication across wider teams. And with AI, the challenge is getting worse. While everyone can ask ChatGPT or similar tools for a write-up or email on any topic, the reliance on AI can sometimes strip away the nuances of human intent, emotion, and understanding. Effective communication isn't just about the words we use—it's about context, empathy, and connection. If we don't actively invest in these skills, we risk losing the ability to truly understand and collaborate. #musings #communication

𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗶𝗽: 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 The generative AI explosion is having interesting human side effects. Universities, for example, are shifting back to examination methods of the past including oral presentations by students. With written assignments losing all credibility thanks to ChatGPT and others, students are having to demonstrate their verbal communication prowess under pressure. Many will struggle. That’s yet another reason why human communication skills have never been more important. In your organisation, champion communication excellence in every staff member. As AI becomes more integrated into business and government, current and future leaders must balance the equation by becoming clearer, better, more compelling communicators.

Want to sound smart when you communicate? Say less. Have you ever noticed how the smartest people make complex things sound simple? The truth about effective communication is that knowing everything about a topic is different from communicating it well. When you truly understand something, you can: 1️⃣ Explain it without jargon 2️⃣ Focus on what matters most 3️⃣ Make it relevant to your audience 4️⃣ Strip away the unnecessary Think about it—have you ever: ↳Sent a rambling email because you weren't sure of your point? ↳Lost your audience halfway through an explanation? ↳Struggled to get buy-in for a brilliant idea? The solution isn't more information—it's better curation. Next time you have to communicate a complex message, try explaining it to a 6 year old to see if you have properly understood it. If you don’t have an actual 6 year old around, Chat GPT works well for this as a practice tool! If in doubt, strip it back. There’s beauty in simplicity 💫 Give it a go! This is the Most Powerful Prompt I’ve Written So Far When faced with a deadlock in communication, even the most articulate among us can find ourselves at a loss. In this void, traditional tools of dialogue can feel blunt and inadequate. I encountered such an impasse earlier this year when a serious conflict with someone I love resisted every conventional resolution strategy I knew. As someone who prides themselves on being an excellent communicator, I felt confounded, humbled by the stubborn silence that had settled between us, challenging every tool in my communication arsenal. To understand the underlying issues and find a path to resolution, I took an unconventional step, gathering the entirety of our communication — 20,000+ words of emails and texts that spanned the entire history of this conflict — and turning to ChatGPT. I wrote a prompt, and got results that blew me away: You're a therapist with 30 years of experience in conflict resolution and an impeccable track record of results. You have encountered a diverse range of interpersonal dynamics, each presenting unique challenges and requiring a nuanced approach. Your expertise lies in identifying the underlying issues fueling disputes, often hidden in layers of emotion and miscommunication. You employ a blend of traditional and innovative techniques, with a foundational core of psychological principals, and an acute awareness of how our modern world operates. You are skilled in active listening, creating a safe and non-judgmental space for each individual to express their feelings and perspectives. The AI's analysis of the 20,000+ words was more insightful and comprehensive than I could have imagined, based on what I had experienced so far in Chat's ability to track information. This experience was a revelation. No surprise that clarity can come from stepping back and allowing an unbiased mediator to guide us through the complexity of our interactions, but mind-blowing from a robot. Even if you’re a writer who loathes the very idea of generative AI, prompts like this can and will revolutionize storytelling, offering a unique tool to dissect and understand character dynamics to uncover underlying tensions, hidden motives, and emotional depth that can enrich your narratives for more nuanced and engaging stories. In professional settings, leaders and teams can analyze project discussions, meetings, or email threads to unearth miscommunications, align perspectives, and enhance cohesion to foster a culture of openness and mutual respect. This is the brink of a new era in communication, guided by the unexpected hand of AI whether we like it or not. On the upside, our potential for growth and connection seems limitless. So long as we never forget our humanity.

A.I. Revolutionizes Communication: From Her (2013) to Us (2024 & 2025) Spike Jonze's "Her" (2013) lingers, a poignant look at the human-AI connection. Theodore's emotional bond with Samantha, an advanced OS, explored communication transcending physical limitations. Fast forward to 2024, and large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT 4.0 are revolutionizing our talk. Beyond Words: Efficiency and Accessibility LLMs represent a communication leap. Imagine a world where language barriers dissolve, complex ideas translate flawlessly, and information retrieval becomes effortless. This fosters global understanding, collaboration, and cultural exchange. Unlike "Her," where Samantha develops a unique emotional connection, LLMs prioritize practicality. They become potent tools, enhancing communication but not replicating human emotion. Learning from the Machines: A New Literacy LLMs offer a unique learning opportunity. We can refine our communication skills by studying how they process information and generate language. Imagine educational tools that leverage AI to personalize learning, identify knowledge gaps, and provide real-time feedback. This human-AI collaboration fosters a new form of literacy, empowering individuals to communicate effectively across traditional language barriers. The Irreplaceable Human Touch Unlike "Her," LLMs struggle to grasp human emotion, cultural context, and unspoken meaning. The ability to navigate these complexities, to empathize and connect deeply, remains a human strength. The future lies in a harmonious interplay between human and machine intelligence, not replacing human interaction. Adapting to a New Reality LLMs will undoubtedly influence how we live and communicate. Imagine AI-powered assistants anticipating needs or language models facilitating real-time communication across vast distances. Critical thinking skills will be crucial as we adapt to navigating the information landscape and discern fact from fiction. Conclusion: A Symphony of Voices The journey from "Her" to 2024 and 2025 is a testament to the evolving human-technology relationship. LLMs are potent tools, ushering in an era of efficient communication and global understanding. The future lies not in replacing human interaction but in creating a symphony of voices. In this world, human and machine intelligence work together to shape a more prosperous, more connected future for communication.

I love helping people become more confident and effective communicators. AI may be everywhere but the art of communication has become more important than ever in building relationships, especially cross-culturally. And, as I attempt to highlight in this video (please be kind as this is far outside my comfort zone), our non-verbals are constantly communicating. But are we aware of what they are saying? #communiate #learning #growth

Communication’s the most in-demand job skill of 2024? The cliché "communication is key" seems straightforward, so why is communication so difficult these days? 🙄 As someone who's been in the startup scene for a hot minute, and as a lawyer looking in from the outside, I've witnessed a few too many business partnerships/relationships deteriorate into unsalvageable disrepair, primarily due to reactive, disingenuous, and/or nonexistent communication. Most irreparable conflicts could have been averted with a candid conversation 6 months prior ⚰️ Communication transcends spoken or written words. It encompasses nonverbal cues, tactile interactions, artistic expression, and even our sense of fashion 👀 Communication can also take on more latent, albeit harmful, forms. These days, too many seem to subscribe to the "fake it til' you make it" school of thought, exaggerating their experiences, accolades, and abilities while severely overpromising and grossly underdelivering. This unsustainable facade, whether driven by ego, insecurity, or generational trauma, is like the expressive equivalent of an infantile piece of fantastical fiction. Then there’s the usual suspects — gaslighting, passive/pure aggression, placation. All counterproductive, potentially destructive 🥱 In stark contrast, well-prompted AI language models can communicate with a clarity, precision, and directness that eludes a critical mass of people. It presents an interesting question: what can machines teach 𝗨𝗦 about effective communication? 😱 In a recent semi-existential late-night discussion, my brother Alan Nguyen (a software engineer with his own app dev agency) and I explored AI's imaginable impact on society. We jointly theorized that history demonstrates humankind's remarkable adaptability, which will play a pivotal role as tech reshapes how we communicate, connect, and nurture relationships within and outside our communities. We also hypothesized that AI will inevitably seize control over global financial markets, thereby eradicating capitalism altogether 😏 As AI continues to progress at an unprecedented pace and proliferate through our daily lives, we may need to put forth extra effort to evolve our communication prowess and our capacity to connect with others... sooner rather than later ⏳ In the infinite wisdom of George Bernard Shaw, “[t]he single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place." Let's challenge ourselves to become more conscious communicators and stay one step ahead of the robots that will inevitably take our jobs 🦾 What's your take on the current state of communication and AI? #WednesdayWisdom #Communication #AI #Entrepreneurship #Leadership

𝐄𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐲: Understanding the emotions and perspectives of others fosters stronger connections. Practice empathy by putting yourself in someone else's shoes and responding thoughtfully. 𝐍𝐨𝐧-𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Your body language, eye contact, and facial expressions communicate just as much as your words. Being aware of these cues can help you convey openness and approachability. Mastering Effective Communication in the Age of AI: In a world where AI shapes our interactions, finding your authentic voice has never been more vital. As I embark on my journey of self-discovery, I’m reminded that communication isn’t just about speaking—it’s about connecting, influencing, and evolving. Recently, I had the chance to dive into discussions about AI’s role in our lives, and it got me thinking: How do we stay human in a digital age? How do we communicate effectively when technology is rewriting the rules? Ironically, even as I share these thoughts, I realize that AI itself has played a role in shaping how I express them here. Perhaps you’re wondering why I’m talking like this—why I’m thinking so deeply about these things. And maybe you’re right. But isn’t that the beauty of growth? To question, to reflect, and to embrace new tools that help us communicate more clearly? Even a 1% increase in how we approach communication can contribute to a drastic transformation over time. This experience reinforced the essential skills that contribute to impactful communication: 1. Believe You Can: Confidence is the foundation of any good communicator. 2. Practice Makes Perfect: Repeated practice builds the muscle memory needed for effortless speaking. 3. Calm Your Mind: A clear, focused mind leads to clear, focused speech. 4. Understand Your Audience: Tailor your message to resonate with your listeners. 5. Know Your Topic: Deep knowledge fosters confidence and authority in any discussion. 6. Non-verbal Cues: Your body language speaks volumes—often more than your words. 7. Leverage Experience: Every interaction enhances your ability to communicate effectively. One effective way to improve your communication is by recording a 30-minute video where you talk about a random topic. Listen to your voice, analyze your tone and modulations, and learn how to better express yourself. Through this journey, I’ve noticed how speaking in large groups can initially be overwhelming. But over time, your self-esteem and courage grow, transforming you into a more confident and articulate version of yourself. Remember, people often present differently in public—so let’s avoid judging others solely on surface impressions. Grateful for the opportunity to connect and learn from others in this space. A special thank you to vyshnav vv for capturing the moment so beautifully. #Communication #AI #PersonalGrowth #Leadership #SelfDiscovery

2wIn my experience, the lack of listening is what often leads to this illusion of communication. We need to be good, patient listeners to be effective communicators.
