UNDERSTANDING STRATEGIES OF TWO EUROPEAN RTO’s. If your photonics company (large or small) does business with either TNO or imec, then this 45 minute panel discussion on the first day of the Optica Global Economics Forum in Malaga will definitely interest you. Both are large Research and Technology organisations in the Netherlands and Belgium respectively. Moderator Jim Kafka, president-elect of Optica, moderated a discussion with Tjark Tjin-A-Tsoi, CEO of TNO, and Luc Van den hove, CEO of imec, focusing on the transition from research to commercialization. Tjark highlighted TNO's diversified portfolio and the need for them to focus on improving market impact. Luc emphasized imec's customer-centric approach, adjusting technology readiness levels (TRL) based on individual partnerships. Both stressed the importance of long-term partnerships, global collaboration, and strategic interdependence. Duplication of effort wastes valuable, expensive resources. They discussed the challenges of attracting and retaining talent, emphasizing brand reputation and meaningful work. The conversation also gathered differing approaches to the value of roadmaps, the impact of globalization and current instabilities, and the balance between public and private sector interests in technology transfer. I especially liked the audience question: When do you say NO? https://lnkd.in/d6nwmJn4

A very important insight into Horizon programs. For the last 20 years ,I've been involved in many many projects , both as an evaluator as well as in bringing SME partners into consortia. I have always wondered if there is a real follow up on projects- what's the real benefit once the project is done? apart for the budget for the beneficiaries. Where's the real sustainability? who implements the results for the benefits of the EU citizens? who takes it to the market ? if at all... Moreover, the fact that many calls do not involve partners from the USA, not even benchmarking to alternatives developed in the states, makes big parts of this program detached from the rest of the world. One of the recent examples , is #Cancermission. Take #LungCancer #Exon20 mutation for example. Drugs are developed mainly in the US. But none of the US NGOs or companies are eligible for funding under these calls. Needless to say, that compassionate use is available for American citizens, yet less to Europeans. It's about time to have a deeper look into this program, to keep up with the world! Marcia Horn, JD Ashraf Abdelghany
Professor Manuel Heitor Manuel Heitor, chair of an expert group evaluating the EU’s research and innovation funding programme, calls for a radical change in Europe’s approach to international collaboration in this field: "We need a budget of at least €220 billion, including a radical simplification in the application process." Heitor highlights the importance of increased collaboration, streamlined processes, and the urgency of preventing a brain drain of young researchers. The association of universities of science and technology in Europe - CESAER - released yesterday the report 'Research careers: A critical choice for Europe'. ℹ️ The full report is available here (PDF) 👉 https://lnkd.in/eTk2G3nt This report presents the results, insights, and recommendations from a 2024 CESAER research careers survey, combining a data-driven analysis of survey outcomes from 24 universities with expert assessments, landscape analyses, and detailed case studies. The report also provides guidance for a 'Choose Europe' initiative and calls for its launch as a pilot under Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions in 2025. "Researchers are the backbone of Europe’s knowledge economy, yet their careers often face instability and uncertainty. It is imperative that we address these challenges head-on, with robust EU actions to enhance the attractiveness of research careers in Europe, above all for young researchers. By improving working conditions, launching targeted funding instruments, and ensuring clear, sustainable career pathways, we can empower young researchers to reach their full potential, thereby strengthening Europe’s position as a global leader in science and technology. It will be the only way to avoid the current European brain drain (primarily to United States) and guarantee brain gain and effective brain circulation in Europe by 2035." -- Manuel Heitor, CESAER Envoy on Research Careers, Co-Chair of CESAER Task Force Human Resources and Full Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico #ResearchCareer #ScienceAndTechnology #YoungResearchers #BrainGain #Europe #EU #SciencePolicy
