#MythsbehindPlasticPollution Myth #2: If you think plastic is that bad, try to live without plastic and you will see it’s impossible. As consumers, you might find it hard to reduce plastic consumption, like us. Single-use plastic products are overpackaged, overproduced and overconsumed. And you probably think that alternatives are not as promoted and accessible as you would like. But the truth is that most plastic items are unnecessary and can be easily replaced by reusable alternatives or completely phased out (here’s our call to the industry and policy-makers to promote and develop alternatives!). We envision a system where products are created within a circular economy that respects planetary resources and our right to a clean and healthy environment. This is already being put into action across the globe. Just a couple of examples of good initiatives out there: ✅ A Plastic Planet work closely with some of the world’s biggest consumer goods companies, bringing them innovation to help solve some of their most pernicious plastic problems through material and systems reinvention. Of course, the actual model of overproduction and overconsumption that pushes us to over consume goods of all kinds doesn’t help. Reducing our consumption would be a first step. ✅ The Plastic Pollution Reduction project in Save the Med collaborates with the Hospitality sector of the Balearic Islands and some other countries of the Mediterranean to help reducing and preventing plastic consumption (thus, reducing their plastic pollution footprint).
