Well, I did a thing. I somehow won the Jack Russel Terrier award (Everyday Excellence Award) at work, which is given to someone who brings excellence every single day, takes pride in their work, is committed to learning and improving themselves, and consistently lives the company values. Oh, and they also ask really smart questions that end up making processes better. Honestly, when I won, I immediately thought, “Wait, are you sure? Have you checked my Slack messages?” Because I definitely don’t always feel like I’m hitting all those marks. But hey, I do try really hard to be those things. This past year has thrown more challenges my way than I can count, and honestly, I wasn’t sure I was going to survive it. But every time life handed me something tricky, I decided to rise to the occasion (usually after a solid cry). Looking back, the growth I’ve experienced both professionally and personally is sometimes more mind-blowing than I can explain. When I first heard I’d won, I immediately thought of all the colleagues I admire who are probably far more deserving of this award. You know, the ones who actually know what they’re doing and make everything look effortless. Seriously, I’m lucky to work alongside people who inspire me every single day. So, if you're reading this and wondering why you didn’t win, trust me, I’m asking the same thing. I’m beyond grateful for the amazing team I work with every day. You all make it easy to show up and give it my best, even when I feel like an imposter in my own skin. And a huge shoutout to the company as a whole. I've never felt so valued and appreciated. It’s not every day you find a place that not only values you but also reminds you that you're doing okay. Now, as I try to get over this overwhelming sense of imposter syndrome and remind myself that, yes, I did earn this award, I’m excited for what the future holds. To my surprise and delight, I was nominated by my co-workers in all four categories. I didn’t win an award this time. But honestly? I was elated just knowing that my colleagues see me as someone who represents these values. When I shared this excitement, someone close to me asked, "You are so happy just being nominated, Why are you so happy if you didn’t win?" That question really made me pause and reflect. Of course, winning feels amazing—I was fortunate to experience that last year. But this time, the nominations themselves meant the world to me. They showed me how my co-workers view me as a professional and as a teammate. It’s a reminder that the impact we make in our daily interactions doesn’t go unnoticed. For me, this wasn’t just about reaching a destination (winning); it was about the journey—how I’ve shown up for my team, embraced our company’s values, and built meaningful connections along the way. So here’s some food for thought: Is the destination the only thing that matters, or is the journey just as important? For me, recognition in any form is a celebration of the journey—the moments, efforts, and values that define who we are as professionals. However, this claim seems somewhat underwhelming, especially considering their workforce size and the upcoming expenditure for the awards ceremony. To put this in perspective, with an employee base ranging between 1,000 and 5,000, the 254 nominations represent only about 5.08% to 25.4% of their total staff. Last year’s nominations, calculated to be around 179, indicate a low participation rate. Moreover, it is important to note that these nominations are solely from staff members, with no input from customers or residents. This exclusion is disheartening, particularly considering the crucial role that customers and residents play in the organisation’s operations. Their feedback and recognition would provide a more comprehensive and authentic measure of performance and service quality. When considering the costs associated with organising and hosting an awards ceremony, including logistics, venue, awards, and lost productivity, one must question the efficiency and impact of this exercise. The expenditure seems extravagant and not necessarily reflective of broad recognition across the organisation. Given these figures and the lack of customer/resident involvement, it's crucial to consider whether the awards genuinely enhance morale and recognition or if they simply serve as a costly tradition with limited reach. In light of these numbers, the resources allocated to the Gold Star Awards might be better invested in more impactful employee and customer engagement initiatives, or better yet spent making the homes of their residents safe, warm and dry.

The Elites Awards did not disappoint 🏆 Here’s one thing they really promote. Always make time to recognise your success. Even if things aren’t going exactly to plan. It’s easy to think that when you’re not where you want to be. That everything is going wrong. To question your process, product and so on. But it’s important to find the parts that are going well. To acknowledge what is working. Stay consistent with that. Whilst working on the other aspects. Plenty of the winners mentioned this last week when taking their award. Acknowledging what is working, even when things are tough, isn’t toxic positivity. It’s not burying your head in the sand and ignoring challenges. It’s giving yourself the credit you deserve. Which helps you deal with the challenges you’re going through. Always make time to acknowledge your wins. No matter how big or small they are.
