While getting ready to present the PSJ status at the APSA Public Policy Section business meeting, I came across some interesting data that I'd like to share. I think I've shared a similar trend analysis before, but this one includes the most recent data. The solid blue line for PSJ shows a great trajectory, gradually improving its journal impact compared to other major journals, which I hope to maintain.

Was privileged to chair the HE Professional sector conference 'REF 2029: What Next' with a wonderful set of speakers. The aim was to enable institutions in their REF planning activities but actually what emerged was just how much is still unknown at this stage in terms of dates, requirements and assessments. As I reflected in my opening address, the continuing changes being made to REF need to be considered within the context of a highly volatile and financially unstable HE environment, and there were strong audience reactions that suggests this is just not happening. The fact that the PCE pilot is being termed 'an experiment' caused huge alarm coupled with an expectation that a 2 year pre-REF submission deadline period is sufficient to identify institutional PCE priorities and then show distance travelled, for panel assessment! However, the HE community and particularly those looking REF preparations are a resilient lot (maybe they need to be!) and there were positive fuzzy feelings around the purpose of REF, what it has already achieved and what some of these changes could achieve in time. My closing comment to the audience asked how they would approach the question 'REF 2029: What Next?' - with a beaten brow, excitement or curiosity - and now I ask the same of you?! #REF #ResearchEngland
