Imagine this: five engineers who work with me got sick 🤒, but of course, the work can't stop! They kept working from home, using a remote access program to handle pending tasks. And me? I'm here, sitting alone in the office, surrounded by five computers... with a life of their own! 😳 The cursors are moving by themselves 🖱️, tabs are opening and closing like magic 🌐, and schematics are appearing on the screens out of nowhere. It feels like the future has arrived, doesn't it? But I must admit, there's something a bit eerie about it all! Technology is advancing rapidly, and we're right in the middle of this transformation. Did author Isaac Asimov have it spot-on 70 years ago imagining a world where people didn’t want to spend time physically together in the same place? In his 1957 science fiction whodunit novel, The Naked Sun, Detective Elijah Baley is sent to the distant planet of Solaris with his robot partner to investigate the murder of an eminent scientist. Solaris is unique in that the entire population adhere to physical distancing and only communicate with each other via video calling. They avoid travelling to be together at all costs and find it to be a distasteful chore. When I first read this book in the 90s, it seemed fantastical but fast-forward to today, and we find ourselves in a world strangely familiar to Asimov’s vision. The COVID-19 pandemic forced millions of people to adapt to remote work, digital communication, and physical distancing, making video calls and virtual meetups the new normal. For many, remote work's provided flexibility and eliminated long commutes. Others, however, miss the human connection that comes from being physically present with colleagues, the impromptu conversations, and the sense of community that an office environment provides. Are we inadvertently embracing Asimov's future, or does in-person connection still matter?
