Ping me if you're interested or know anyone who might be!" https://lnkd.in/eG8pCFSW The whole shebang: I turned 70 this past summer, and in early October I retired after three years working remotely on developer content at Okta/Auth0 by Okta. Along with some audacious bucket-list travel plans and more time to indulge in grand-parenting, good eats, libro.fm, and NY Times Cooking, I’ve been keeping an eye out for interesting new tech projects. Projects where I can use my eclectic old-fashioned skills to give back to creative people, beloved places, and our beautiful, beleaguered planet. In that frame of mind, I came across a LinkedIn post by a colleague from long-ago Yahoo days, Ryo Chijiiwa. Ryo and I worked together from 2005-2008, during an almost forgotten Yahoo renaissance driven in part by the acquisitions of Flickr, Delicious, and Upcoming, and the influence of their founders. In the immediate aftermath of Google’s IPO, Yahoo was peopled by some brilliant makers and iconoclastic engineers like Laurie Voss, Andy Baio, Leonard Lin, Neal Sample; and thoughtful and committed leaders and thinkers like danah boyd, Chad Dickerson, Bradley Horowitz, Irene Au, Julie Choi—to name just a few of the inspiring humans who were my colleagues. (Apologies for the unfortunate gender and diversity imbalance in my very short and somewhat haphazard list, it was typical aughties.) The hopeful Yahoo moment didn’t last, and neither did Ryo.  Fast forward a couple decades to a scary new time. Nowadays Ryo is developing FireSparrow (https://firesparrow.ai/). His boot-strapped startup, Ponderosa.ai, Inc., makes a drone to empower fire practitioners with tools for situational awareness and aerial suppression. Ryo and I worked together ages ago, but recently, in one of those serendipitous online moments that don’t happen often anymore, I found his “time to unveil this project” post here on LinkedIn.  I got in touch with Ryo. Yes, there really is a working drone. It flies. A couple weeks ago, it successfully dumped a one gallon payload of water. High-altitude satellites "take orders" and underwater "intelligent brain" perceive, Wuhan's information-driven development leads the way The "Wuhan No. 1" satellite, positioned at 560 kilometers, has secured a major order for data services, offering clear imagery and accurate positioning to monitor local landmarks. Launched in May and operational since September 7, it delivers high-resolution hyperspectral imaging and video capabilities, aiding in air quality monitoring, disaster tracking, and crop assessment, thus enhancing urban management. During the Wuhan Crossing the River Festival, drones showcased their role in public safety by monitoring the event and providing real-time insights for emergency responses. The Wuhan Urban Operation Management Center employed this technology to enhance situational awareness. Additionally, satellite data is bolstering infrastructure in Wuhan's low-altitude drone demonstration zone, nearing completion. Informatization efforts extend to citizen services, where off-site provident fund loan repayments at the Wuhan Citizens' Home are processed in under 10 minutes. A unified national business system has improved online service handling, cutting down physical queues. Digital governance is advancing with streamlined processes for various city services, including household registration transfers. In construction and logistics, the use of unmanned delivery vehicles has halved transportation costs for ZTO Express, while intelligent control systems for tower cranes increased efficiency by over 30%. Wuhan is embracing smart solutions across government services, AI in healthcare, and integrated transport systems, enhancing service delivery and reducing the need for in-person visits. Wuhan's effective water management utilizes digital twin technology for real-time monitoring of the Yangtze River, ensuring proactive flood preparedness. The presence of finless porpoises highlights ecological conservation success, complemented by a live broadcast platform for public engagement.
