I am thrilled to be joining a panel at the Children’s Media Conference in Sheffield on Wednesday 10th July 2024, 5:00pm - 6:00pm BST. The panel will take place in Showroom Cinema 2. The title is Inclusivity Now: The Lion’s Story ABOUT THE TALK A collaboration between CMC’s Inclusivity Now and Thinking Differently strands, we provide insights into the importance of ensuring diverse storytellers create and produce their own stories, and examples of successful projects. Children primarily reside in three spaces: home, school, and community. To create better connections between and among these spaces, mainstream media content can be used as a vehicle to inform and engage youth in educational contexts. But for this media to be effective, it must convey authentic, relevant stories about those communities in their own voice. There is an African proverb that says: ’Until the lion has his own historian, the story of the hunt will be told from the perspective of the hunter.’ We need more stories from the perspective of the lion; as well as the hunter. Community-based creators and studios using innovative distribution methods are essential for success when ‘Thinking Differently’ about the role of media and storytelling in education.

Read on as Zoya C. shares her experience as a Resident at The Digital Everyday (presented by Point of View, Design Beku and Digital Narratives Studio) in 2023 ⬇ "When I joined TDE as a Resident I had many questions, even doubts, as to the place of digital technologies in the work that I did, and what feminist responses in and through technology could look like. I also felt this near-urgent need for language — language to address how technology, activism, and the body are intertwined, and to connect that to organising and education in libraries. I needed not only to have a space to learn and critique but also to co-create language and think through alternatives to what we have now. This was possible in TDE because the course was a place where we could talk with each other. As we took turns to co-facilitate our conversations, we also built our own forms of ownership within the course and had the space to make it our own in many ways. The presented modules were powerful narratives of critique and change. Each Knowledge Partner invited participants to respond to, extend, or diverge from their material by bringing in instances and reflections from our lives. What made the experience as a Resident most valuable for me was when we listened and learnt from each other’s responses and made unexpected, moving connections." 🌟 Want to join us on this feminist learning journey?
