Cold Joint Waterproofing in Electrical Rooms
In any commercial or residential building, electrical rooms are critical spaces that house key power distribution systems. Keeping these rooms dry is essential for both operational safety and longevity of the equipment. A common source of water infiltration in such rooms is the cold joint—a point where two separate concrete pours meet, creating a potential vulnerability. Without proper waterproofing, moisture can seep through these joints, causing damage to electrical systems and posing serious safety risks. One such project was completed last week at a high-rise residential building located on Lakeshore Blvd. W in Etobicoke.
Repair Method
To waterproof a cold joint, the process begins with a thorough cleaning of the joint, ensuring all dirt, debris, and contaminants are removed. Once the area is prepped, the joint is coated with an industrial-strength adhesive, and a continuous cement patch is installed along the joint at a 45-degree angle. For a more robust seal, the joint is coated with a waterproofing membrane, creating a watertight barrier.
