IMHO re: Native planting:
Here's the thing about not "doing it right." In spite of the fact that (in my opinion) the categorization of native species will certainly change as the planting zones warm up, (TBH, I do love that I can now plant things in my previously too-cold zone) we need to be cognizant of the fact that natural heritage preservation is more than plant selection and design. It's so much more than that. If conservation areas are not prioritized (AND interpreted), we risk:
• loss of already shrinking habitats for millions of creatures
• destruction of wildlife corridors which support key critters
• water quality deterioration
• scarcity of food sources for both prey and predators that can cause regional extinction
• degraded air quality
• reduction of property values
• ability to attract and retain residents, businesses, and a quality workforce
• decimation of legacy forests, prairies, fens, and pollinator support
• devastation of local food sources
• operational and financial sustainability
• eligibility for crucial funding
• loss of outdoor recreation opportunities
• lack of immersive educational experiences that bolster prioritization of conservation
Nature deserves better. We can all play a role because - yes, we must "do it right."
Kudos to you, Scott Martin & City of Chattanooga!

Growing up in nature and then watching its decimination over the last 30yrs in my working life is heartbreaking.
I think we’re suffering as a species quite simply because of our detachment from the natural environment. We know we feel better when we’re in it & when we look after it, yet here we are with 3% left across the board from just 100yrs ago.
We’ve been led to eat it, spray it, shoot it, skin it, cull it but not live with it and protect it with our lives.
I’m not saying there aren’t incredible people doing extraordinary things to help nature thrive but it’s an effort that needs addressing on a larger scale and it can all start in the garden.
I’ve invested 30+yrs in construction with the notion of building homes not houses, I’ve researched how creating the right environment during the building process creates the best place for a family to thrive once the build is completed. Sowing and maintaining Wild flower meadows, hedgerows and planting organic vegetables has proven in our research that everyone benifits, from the nature, the workforce, the quality of the build and family life.
At Axford & Heaton we’ve come up with a solution to put back 3% of wildflower meadow land in 3yrs through construction sites….open the link to find out how we can make the United Kingdom and beyond healthy again.

It’s time to flip the narrative around cues to care to normalize habitat landscaping as the model to aspire to, not the one to fit into an ornamental landscape framework. My latest blog post - lists out how even people with traditional yards or aesthetic restrictions can consider cues to care in an ecological light and make choices to add them to their yard. #rewilding#nurturenativenaturehttps://lnkd.in/ecEP2eZ9
