But did you know they also generate massive amounts of heat as waste? Instead of letting all that energy dissipate into thin air, what if we could harness it for good? 🔹𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐃𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐦𝐚 ▪ Imagine a mid-sized cryptocurrency operation with 𝟏,𝟎𝟎𝟎 energy-efficient mining rigs. ▪ These rigs churn out enough heat to warm over 𝟒,𝟔𝟎𝟎 U.S. homes for a year or pop 𝟒𝟔𝟑,𝟖𝟎𝟑 metric tons of popcorn (with or without melted butter). ▪ That’s a lot of potential energy going to waste! ▪ Traditionally, this heat dissipates, lost to the atmosphere. ▪ But what if we could capture it, repurpose it, and create something sustainable? 🔹𝐖𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐲𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠: Enter waste heat recycling. Data centers are evolving to recapture and recycle this excess heat. Here’s how it works: 𝟏. 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐄𝐱𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐬: Waste heat is captured and transferred via heat exchangers. 𝟐. 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐭 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐍𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬: The heat is then sent to district heating networks, providing sustainable warmth to homes and businesses. 𝟑. 𝐋𝐢𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠: Liquid cooling, using water, is the most efficient method to transport heat. Water can hold four times as much heat as air. 🔹𝐀 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 ▪ In the #Netherlands, new data centers must explore waste heat recycling. ▪ #Norway requires it for data centers above 𝟐 𝐌𝐖. ▪ #Denmark incentivizes it through tax cuts. ▪ The #EU Energy Efficiency Directive now mandates waste heat recycling. 🔹𝐇𝐈𝐕𝐄 𝐃𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐚𝐲 ▪ HIVE Digital, with data centers in Canada and Sweden, is already recycling waste heat. ▪ Their 𝟑𝟎 𝐌𝐖 data center in #Lachute, #Québec, heats a 𝟐𝟎𝟎,𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝐬𝐪. 𝐟𝐭 factory, while their 𝟑𝟐 𝐌𝐖 data center in #Boden, #Sweden, warms a 𝟗𝟎,𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝐬𝐪. 𝐟𝐭 greenhouse near the 𝐀𝐫𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐂𝐢𝐫𝐜𝐥𝐞. 🔹𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐭 ▪ Let’s turn data centers into sustainable heat sources, warming our homes and reducing energy waste. ▪ It’s a win-win for technology and the planet! Can Data Centers Be Sources of Sustainable Heat? Data centers support the modern technologies we rely on but also generate incredible amounts of heat as waste. And since computers tend to be very sensitive to heat, operators go to great lengths (and expense) to get rid of it, even relocating to countries with lower year-round average temperatures. But what if we could harness it instead of letting all that heat disappear into thin air? How Much Heat Does a Data Center Produce? To understand how much heat we’re talking about, imagine a mid-sized cryptocurrency operation with 1,000 of the most energy-efficient mining rigs on the market today, the Antminer S21 Hydro. One of these rigs needs 5,360 watts of power, which adds up to 47 MWh over a year. Multiply that by 1,000 and you end up with over 160 billion BTU, which is enough energy to heat over 4,600 U.S. homes for a year, or if it happens to be Oscar season, enough heat to pop 463,803 metric tons of popcorn. Less if you want melted butter on it. How Waste Heat Recycling Works? At a high level, waste heat is recaptured and transferred via heat exchangers to district heating networks, for example, where it can be used to provide sustainable heat. Cool air is then returned to the data center and the cycle begins again. Liquid cooling is by far the most efficient means of recapturing and transporting heat since water can hold roughly four times as much heat as air. Data centers worldwide are already recycling their waste heat to farm trout in Norway, heat research facilities in the U.S., and heat swimming pools in France. A Greener Future for Data Centers? New regulations may make waste heat recycling mandatory for data centers. In the Netherlands, Amsterdam and Haarlemmermeer require new data centers to explore recycling waste heat. Norway mandates it for all new data centers above 2 MW, while Denmark offers incentives. The EU Energy Efficiency Directive will also require data centers to recycle waste heat from late 2023. HIVE Digital Provides Sustainable Heat HIVE Digital recycles waste heat from data centers in Canada and Sweden. The 30 MW center in Lachute heats a 200,000 sq. ft. factory, while the 32 MW center in Boden heats a 90,000 sq. ft. greenhouse. In 2023, our CO2-footprint was reduced by 𝟗% 𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐫, and 𝟑𝟎% 𝐨𝐟 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐲 consumed was sourced from renewable sources.
