It costs ~$400K to run the latest Llama 3.1 model. That’s right. If you’re thinking of using the giant 405B parameter model, you’ll need 16 H100 GPUs, which go for $25K each. Not ideal. Currently, the "workaround" is renting GPUs from cloud provider. Using services like AWS or RunPod, the same model will cost ~$80 / hour. Still a lot. That’s the drawback to Open-Source. Since the model is open, you are responsible for deploying it and eating up the infrastructure cost.

Operators know they need to be thinking about preserving value added services while orienting to a cloud and 5G future. But there’s no need to think you can’t do both—and at your own speed.
