People Coming Together - Internet Society The Internet Society Managing Director and Incoming CEO, Sally Wentworth, spoke at the IEEE / People-Centered Internet event, ‘A Celebration of 50 Years of the Internet’. She celebrated one of the most phenomenal inventions that has undeniably transformed our world for the better: the Internet. She emphasized that there is only one globally connected, decentralized Internet. It is the people’s resource, controlled by no one, kept thriving and growing by many stakeholders because it is made up of all participating networks. She also mentioned that the pioneers gave the world this technical infrastructure to use without charge and that the protocols come together as the Internet, a self-governing force for good in the world. The Internet has spurred an entire digital economy, kept us connected through a global pandemic, provided unparalleled access to information and education, and leveled the playing field for people who are isolated or marginalized. However, there’s no guarantee that the Internet will always be here, as nations are imposing borders on it, companies are trying to control it for their own interests, and governments are shutting down the Internet and suppressing free expression. The Internet Society supports and collaborates closely with the Internet Engineering and Research Task Force (IETF) to facilitate the evolution of the TCP/IP protocol suite and the integration of new protocols into the Internet architecture.
